Colossians 2:11-23

11 In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. 13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, 14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it. 16 So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, 17 which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ. 18 Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, 19 and not holding fast to the Head, from whom all the body, nourished and knit together by joints and ligaments, grows with the increase that is from God. 20 Therefore, if you died with Christ from the basic principles of the world, why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to regulations—21 “Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle,” 22 which all concern things which perish with the using—according to the commandments and doctrines of men? 23 These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion, false humility, and neglect of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh.

Vs. 11 In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ,

In several N.T. passages the Apostle Paul makes it clear that the circumcision of the flesh which certain Jews often held as often incumbent upon those Gentiles who believed by grace has no place in the New Covenant (see Acts 15:1-29 for a history of this issue, then see Rom 2:27; Gal 5:6; 6:15; Phil 3:3). That said Paul was not opposed to the circumcision of the flesh for those Jews who believe in Jesus Christ (see Acts 21:17-25). Yet if that is all that it is, a circumcision of the flesh, (and thus just a mere ceremonial act) then it is utterly useless because it does not affect or change ones heart (see Rom 2:25-29). And so what the Apostle Paul is declaring here is that all who believe in Jesus Christ are "circumcised" with a circumcision made without hands, a circumcision that entails putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, a circumcision of Christ. And so a circumcision that is in the Spirit, not in the Letter, a circumcision that changes the heart, and thus changes the life and the deeds of it (Consider Deut. 30:6 then see  Rom 2:28-29). The circumcision of Christ (as a metaphor) then is the new nature that God has implanted in everyone who believes in His Son whether Jew or Gentile. And having become a new creation by Holy Spirit regeneration we are to live in accordance with that new nature, and not by the old natures deeds of the flesh (Gal 5:24). That is what the Apostle Paul is essentially saying here that we through the circumcision of Christ have been fundamentally changed, that our hearts have been circumcised, by the circumcision of Christ, and thus we are to live according to our new nature, i.e. the new creation that God has created us to be In Christ (2 Cor 5:17).

Vs. 12 "buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead."

Having first declared our being circumcised with the circumcision of Christ, the Apostle Paul now reiterates that we also have been buried with Christ in baptism and were raised with Him through faith in the working of God (see Rom 6:1-13). For in commanding that we put of the deeds of the flesh, we must realize that our baptism with Christ means that we not only died with Him, but we have been raised with Him to new and everlasting life. In essence then what Paul is doing in stating all these things is not only building us up in our faith In Christ, but he also denouncing all that the false teachers might expound as being necessary or incumbent upon believers. Whether this is circumcision of the flesh or whether this is trying to attain too some sort of spiritually "elite" status, or Spirit gifting, or anything else in order to become a complete or victorious Christian.  For by faith in Jesus Christ's Person we have everything we need. For through Christ we have been given victory over sin, Satan and death (1 Cor 15:57) and thus as we journey homeward we are continually being refined by God's Spirit and our circumstances for His purposes, both here and now, and for eternity. And so whenever someone says (or tries to infer) that your faith in Jesus Christ is not enough, then you need to take that as a clear warning to steer clear of whatever their trying to tell you. For you and I are complete by faith in Him.

Vs. 13-15 13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, 14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.

Now in verse thirteen the Apostle Paul makes it clear that though we were once dead in our sins and transgressions, that is Spiritually dead and thus separated from a covenant relationship with God because of our sins and the uncircumcision of our flesh (see Eph. 2:11-13); Jesus Christ has now made us who believe in Him Spiritually alive together with Himself, having forgiven us all our transgressions. For that is what happens when one is born again the moment they believe in Jesus Christ's Person, the Holy Spirit comes into them and makes them Spiritually alive with Christ. And thus through Jesus Christ we are brought into a covenant relationship with God, a grace based relationship through the New Covenant and not the Old (consider 2 Cor 3:5-6, 9; Heb 7:22; 8:6-13; 9:15; 10:16-18 etc.). And so we are to live out our faith by the Spirit of God, not the letter of the law, and so a relationship which requires no circumcision of our flesh. For it is Jesus Christ and Him alone who has fulfilled all of God's righteous requirements for our redemption from sin and death through His own righteousness and death on the cross. And so Jesus has not only forgiven us all of our transgressions, but He has also wiped out the hand writing of requirements that was contrary to us, and He has taken it out of the way having nailed it to the cross (vs. 14). Now Jesus' having nailed the handwriting of requirements that was against us and contrary to us, to the cross, is saying that Jesus Christ has finished it all! No one who trusts in Jesus will ever again be charged with either their sins or the impossible demands of trying to keep all the Law. Therefore Jesus having done all that God required for our salvation has effectively disarmed all principalities and powers; for when Jesus was crucified He not only paid for all our sins, He also disarmed all principalities and powers, who could (and would) use our failures to keep all of God's Law as a means of bringing condemning charges against us before God (consider Gal 3:10-14). And so in a wonderful twist worked by God. Satan and all the powers of darkness, (even the earthly principalities and powers) though thinking that they had brought about their own desires and "victory" through Jesus' crucifixion death, only became agents of forwarding God's redemption plans for us all who believe in Him. For with Jesus' resurrection from the dead and His ascension back to God the Father He can forever point to the cross where both He, and the handwriting of requirements having been nailed to cross, so that the debt could be paid in full, as well as to indicate that the debt has been paid in full, and so with our ransom fully paid He can forever justify us all simply by faith in His Person (Rom 5:1), and in so doing Jesus Christ has made a public spectacle of them all, triumphing over them all in it (vs. 15).

Vs. 16-17 16 So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, 17 which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ.

With the debt paid and the handwriting of requirements now effectively annulled, why then should we let anyone judge us regarding whatever types of foods we eat or things we drink, or regarding any sort of religious festival, sacred day or even a Sabbath (see Rom 14). For as the Apostle makes clear all are a mere shadow of things to come, but the substance (the true spiritual meat) is of Christ.

Vs. 18-19 18 Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, 19 and not holding fast to the Head, from whom all the body, nourished and knit together by joints and ligaments, grows with the increase that is from God.

From "Let no one judge you" (vs. 16) and now "Let no one cheat you" (vs. 18), the Apostle Paul carries on a continuum of thought from verse sixteen to verse eighteen in regards too not letting ourselves be judged. For the word used in verse eighteen translated cheat carries with it a strong sense of judicial judgment against someone or something. Therefore the Apostle Paul here is commanding us not to let the false teachers either judge us as to our standing with Christ, (because we do not submit to either them or their false doctrines, consider Gal 2:4-5), or cheat us of our reward with Him by our willfully engaging in any of their unsound or non-Scriptural practices. In regards too this they seem to be particular fond of a false humility, a self imposed and defined piety which here also involved (or invoked) the worship of angels, possibly as mediators to God on behalf of a believer as the Believers Bible Commentary notes, and which later took the form of praying through or to "canonized" saints and or Mary's intercession in the post Biblical Apostles era that became Roman Catholicism. Now we know that there is only one Mediator between God and mankind and that is the Man Christ Jesus (see 1 Tim 2:15). Yet down through the centuries false teachers have always sought to undermine the Preeminence of the Lord Jesus Christ and or His availability to each and every person who comes exclusively to Him by faith (consider Heb 4:14-16; 1 John 2:1-2).
Now what form this angelic "worship" took we do not know, and it is basically irrelevant. For what we do know is that mankind is never to worship any angelic beings (see Rev 19:9-10; 22:8-9). For though they appear many times in the Scriptures, (in both spirit and bodily form) and are often employed as God's heralds or messengers, or even as His agents sent to accomplish His purposes. Angels who are sent by God always seek God's and God's Son Glorification and Will, never their own. Therefore their worship, adoration, or exaltation is utterly contrary to the Scriptures, and is only according the fleshly "wisdom" of man who thinks such things are actually being "spiritual." When in fact those who do so are only deceived. For God has committed nothing to the angels, but has bestowed all power, authority, prestige, glory, and honor on His Son the Lord Jesus Christ, so that all should honor, worship and glorify Him alone (see John 5:23-24; Heb 1:1-14). And thus their worship is only a downgrading of the Lord Jesus Christ's Preeminence in the church, which no angel sent from God would ever do. Therefore the Apostle Paul is adamant that we are not to follow their ways or heed their doctrines, rather we must all hold fast to the Head of the Body which is Jesus Christ and Him alone. And not worship Jesus plus angels, or canonized saints, or Marry, or anyone or anything else. For it is by Jesus Christ alone that mankind comes into a personal and saving relationship with God (John 14:6; Acts 4:12; 1 Tim 2:15). And thus it is from Jesus Christ alone, through whom the whole body (that is the believing church) is both spiritually nourished and knit together, by joints and ligaments and grows with the increase that comes from God alone.

Vs. 20-23 20 Therefore, if you died with Christ from the basic principles of the world, why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to regulations—21 “Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle,” 22 which all concern things which perish with the using—according to the commandments and doctrines of men? 23 These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion, false humility, and neglect of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh.

Previously the Apostle Paul warned us all saying: "Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ" (vs. 8). And now the Apostle Paul uses the same phrase as he declares that we having died with Christ to the "basic principals of the world" should not be subjecting ourselves to mans self decreed regulations (vs.20). Now the "basic principals of the world" are those elementary things that "the world" (I.e. unregenerate mankind) in context of religion believes by observing and keeping will approve them to God. And thus those things which people mistakenly apply religious efficacy or value too in effecting our standing with God, or as the Apostle says in verse 22 as empowering us against the indulgence of the flesh (i.e. our sin nature).
Therefore the Apostle Paul now rather poignantly asks: ..."why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to regulations—21 “Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle,” 22 which all concern things which perish with the using—according to the commandments and doctrines of men? 23 These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion, false humility, and neglect of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh."

And so the Colossians having begun with the grace of God had sadly fallen back under the bondage of man (consider 1 Cor 7:23; Gal 4:9-11). And so rather than holding fast to the Head, who is Jesus Christ, they had begun too, or better had been beguiled into thinking that somehow Jesus Christ (and their faith in Him) wasn't enough. And so they began obeying the doctrines and commandments of men. Doctrines and commandments that said they needed to abstain from certain foods, or touching certain things, or refraining from certain activities etc. Not that any of the things that they were being commanded to steer clear of were inherently evil or sinful, rather they were merely perishable things, (i.e. natural things), things which have no eternal significance or continuance, things which are morally neutral in effect, and so as the Apostle says here, things which perish with the using (vs. 22). Yet somehow (likely through their own observance of those things) these decrees began to take on great significance in the hearts and minds of the Colossian believers. And so the Apostle Paul in refuting and exposing the uselessness of observing those kinds of things, says of them in verse twenty three that: "These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion, false humility, and neglect of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh."
Notice then what the Apostle calls what they were doing and observing, saying that they were only following a "self-imposed religion", a "false humility", and thus they were not following Jesus Christ when they were observing such things. Instead they were only following the doctrines and commandments of men. Which have an "appearance of wisdom", but are as Paul says no value against the indulgences of the flesh. Yet throughout church history these sorts of ascetic rules and lifestyles always seem to find traction amongst some, who maybe started off in a honest pursuit of holiness, but somewhere along the way they get turned aside into making much of the temporal and perishable things of this life, rather than the eternal, and so in time they eventually lose the Gospel's life giving Message and or transforming power in their own lives; which goes to the heart of legalism and the danger it presents to us all who want to live by faith and be justified by faith in Jesus Christ alone (Rom 5:1; 14:23). For a self imposed external religion and piety seen and observed by all is hardly the "religion" and internal piety that God desires of us all, and which comes to us all when we see our own need for the Lord Jesus Christ and in repentance and faith call upon Him, who then changes us.  "For we walk by faith, not by sight." 2 Cor 5:7 Thus we walk with and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, not an "ism", thus not Asceticism, Gnosticism, Stoicism, Catholicism, Calvinism, Arminianism, Ana-Baptism, Pacifism, Pentecostalism, Hedonism, or any other theological stripe or school of thought that puts itself before or alongside of the Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Either as a means to Him, or as a means of obeying Him. For obedience to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ comes to us all through the Scriptures, but in particular the New Testament which governs us all in the New Covenant. I don't know where your at today but I hope in some way this has helped you and blessed you by keeping your faith and focus on Christ Jesus and Him alone, for it is by faith in Jesus Christ and Him alone that we have remission of all our sins and everlasting life.

Colossians 2:1-10

1 For I want you to know what a great conflict I have for you and those in Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh, 2 that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, and attaining to all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the knowledge of the mystery of God, both of the Father and of Christ, 3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. 4 Now this I say lest anyone should deceive you with persuasive words. 5 For though I am absent in the flesh, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the steadfastness of your faith in Christ. 6 As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, 7 rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving. 8 Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ. 9 For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; 10 and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.

Vs. 1 The Apostle Paul's begins by mentioning his great conflict (or struggle) on behalf of the brethren at Colossae and those in Laodicea was not an exaggeration. The word he uses here indicates being involved in an intense struggle, often against strong and determined opposition, and thus requiring exerting all of ones energies (both physical and mental) in doing so. In early times it was used of those competing in the stadium for the prize; in the Christian context it is used of each and every believers fighting and striving for the Kingdom of God (consider Luke 13:24; 1 Tim 6:12; 2 Tim 4:7; Heb 12:1). Now of course this is not something that one does in their own strength, but as the Apostle Paul says of his own striving for the gospel, in the power and strength of the Lord Jesus Christ (see Col. 1:29). And so here the Apostle Paul declares his own great conflict for all the brethren at Collisee and Laodicea and the surrounding region, who had not seen him face to face. For Paul though having not yet personally met many of these brethren; for he himself was currently imprisoned; could not but have his heart torn wide open by what he was hearing about them all. For the false teachers and their gnostic doctrines were rapidly infiltrating the churches there and thus distorting of the Gospel of Christ; making acquiring their "secret knowledge" and or observing their ascetic rules and man-made rituals the means of salvation, rather than having all of ones faith in the Living Lord Jesus Christ. And so here Paul takes the word and applies it to his own great conflict for them all, a fight which he is waging on their behalf in prayer. For he knows what is at stake if the gnostic doctrines take root amongst them. Not only will they steal away their soundness of faith; and or rob them of their Christian liberties; but also such doctrines will destroy their unity as brethren.

Vs. 2-3 Therefore the Apostle Paul's exhortations and prayer for them all is so that their "that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, and attaining to all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the knowledge of the mystery of God, both of the Father and of Christ, 3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge."

There's a lot there so maybe it's best to break Paul's statement into some manageable phrases. First then "that their hearts may be encouraged." Obviously Paul wants the brethren their to stand fast in their faith as they have received it, and thus be encouraged by what Paul has written to them to further their understanding and growth in their faith, but he also wants them to be encouraged by his prayers and love and concern for them all.

"being knit together in love" Not only does the Apostle Paul want them to be individually encouraged, but he desires that they all are knit together in love. The verb he uses here (translated knit) here means to be united or held together by love. Thus controversy within an assembly is not a time for discord and disunity (though there will be factions, so that those who are approved may be recognized, 1 Cor 11:19) but rather controversy within a congregation is a time for drawing closer to the Lord, His truth, and each other. For once sound doctrine is established or re-established, love is always the hallmark of genuine Christian faith and unity.

Having exhorted then that their hearts be knit together in love. The Apostle Paul goes on and says he wants them all "...attaining to all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the knowledge of the mystery of God, both of the Father and of Christ"

Full assurance in the original is actually one word meaning "supreme fullness." In this context it denotes the superabundance of the knowledge of God that is epitomized in Christ as the one in whom God actively reveals himself, and through whom He exclusively works salvation in the heavens and in the earth. For in attaining "to all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the knowledge of the mystery of God, both of the Father and of Christ" a believer becomes more and more convinced of the realities and riches of God's Person and His salvation for them In Christ. For it is in God the Father and Jesus Christ the Son that all the hidden treasures of wisdom and knowledge are found. And so if the false teachers thought they could seduce the believers minds with their so called secret knowledge and "spiritual insights" the Apostle Paul lays that all to rest. For only in the Scriptures, is God's Holy Word and Wisdom, all which point one to the Lord Jesus Christ who is the Divine Person of this, and who being One with God always declares His truth. And so too look elsewhere for knowledge of God; either of the Father or of the Son is only looking to be deceived. Now it has been duly noted in the Believers Bible commentary that: "The expression full assurance is used three times in the NT. (1) Full assurance of faith—we rest on God’s word, His testimony to us (Heb. 10:22). (2) Full assurance of understanding—we know and are assured (Col. 2:2). (3) Full assurance of hope—we press on with confidence as to the outcome (Heb. 6:11)."

Vs. 4 "Now this I say lest anyone should deceive you with persuasive words."

The Apostle Paul's warning in verse four is that one who is not grounded in the truth can be swayed away from the truth through persuasive words. For every cult always has it's charismatic speakers and language and powerful personalities forwarding it, who watch out for lost and wandering and starving souls like birds of prey (consider Prov 27:7) . Now the word Paul uses here to describe their skill at this (translated persuasive words) appears only here in the N.T. It means to deceive someone through skillfully presented and plausible arguments; that is they make their case through the cunning use of words and reasoning's, often presented with an intellectual flair, which on the surface make it seem probable to the uninformed, but when tested by the Scriptures Authority, they quickly become unravelled for what they are and that is utterly false and misleading. Both the Mormons and the Jehovah Witnesses have mastered this, by first using the Scriptures to validate themselves, and then skillfully pulling people away from the Scriptures to bring them under their own false and misleading claims, and thus under their own authority and bondage. Sadly they are not alone in their guile.

Vs. 5 "For though I am absent in the flesh, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the steadfastness of your faith in Christ."

The Apostle having warned the brethren not to be led astray by those whose only skill in the Christian life is the guile misuse of the Scriptures now begins with a positive exhortation. Encouraging the brethren too continue on in their good conduct and sound faith In Christ Jesus (vs. 5-7). For though Paul was absent in the flesh, yet he was with them in spirit rejoicing to see their good order and the steadfastness of their faith In Christ (vs.5). The Believers Bible Commentary does great service to verse five when it states: "This verse shows how intimately aware the Apostle Paul was of the problems and perils facing the Colossians. He pictures himself as a military officer looking over the assembled troops as they stand ready for inspection. The two words order and steadfastness are military terms. The first describes the orderly array of a company of soldiers, whereas the second pictures the solid flank which is presented by them. Paul rejoices as he sees (in spirit though not in body) how the Colossians were standing true to the word of God." vs. 5

Vs. 6  "As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him"

And so as we have received the Lord Jesus Christ (that is by faith) so we are to walk in Him (consider 2 Cor 5:7). The verb the Apostle Paul uses here translated walk means in this context to continue on, live on. It's usage in the N.T. is extensive both in the literal sense and more importantly in the theological sense of our living our new lives in Christ as His disciples. And thus not walking (i.e. living) like those who do not believe in God, but rather as those who do believe and thus have received both His everlasting mercies and His Holy Spirit life through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ (consider Eph. 4:17-24, vs. 17, 22 words appearance). Thus no longer living according to the lusts of flesh, but rather walking (i.e. living) by the Spirit of God (Gal 5:16; Rom 8:1, 4; 13:13-14). Therefore let us walk (i.e. live) as children of light, for the fruit of the Spirit is in all righteousness, godliness and truth (Eph. 5:8-9 also see Eph. 5:15-21) For when we do we walk not only worthy of the calling with which we were called, we walk worthy of the Lord (Eph. 4:1; Col 1:10; 1 Thess. 2:12). And so let us all who believe in Jesus Christ strive to live lives that are true to our high and holy calling and thus true to the Lord Himself (1 John 1:6-7; 2:6; 2:10-11; 2 John 4, 6; 3 John 3-4; Rev 3:4; 16:15).

Vs. 7 "rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving."

The Apostle Paul's use of some metaphors here is to convey the believers reality in Christ. First is that we are rooted in Him. The word used here (as many commentators have noted) is an agricultural/horticultural term indicating being permanently rooted. Thus once we believe in the Lord Jesus Christ we are permanently rooted in Him. A believer need never fear being uprooted from Him since once God has planted us In Christ, He not only nourishes us In Christ, (through His Word) but He Himself acts like the Divine Gardener who prunes us too look more and more like Christ Jesus the Lord (consider John 15:1-9). And so our being rooted In Christ has to do with our salvation which occurred the moment we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ (Eph 1:13-14). But our being built up in Him (as we will see) is an ongoing building process. Therefore having declared our being permanently rooted In Christ the Apostle Paul then shifts our attention to an architecture metaphor (again already noted by several commentaries). Saying that we all, both as individual believers as well as a collective Body of believers are being built up in Him. The first work of God is a one time only occurrence, once rooted were rooted! But now the Apostle's use of the architecture metaphor indicates that this being built up in Jesus Christ who is the foundation is an ongoing process. For the again Jesus Christ is the foundation which God has laid (consider 1 Cor 3:11); while God Himself is the builder steadily adding to the foundation new souls every day, in ever place, in every generation where the Gospel is preached and the Lord Jesus Christ believed on, and thus the building steadily rises higher and higher to the glory of God. If you think about it, it stands in marked contrast to the ancient tower of Babylon where mankind thought to exalt themselves above God by building it. For this building is being built by God Himself for the glory, honor and praise of His Son. That's one aspect of God's building us up in Jesus Christ. Another which the Apostle Paul relates to us in his Ephesians epistle is that in being built up in Christ all believing Jews and Gentiles become one building. And so there's not a church for the Jews and then one for the Gentiles. Both are planted by God, and are being built up by God In Christ who again is the foundation or chief cornerstone of all that God is building (Eph 2:20). And so all of us who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ become a holy Temple to the Lord; literally a dwelling place for God in the Spirit (See Eph 2:19-22). That is the point of our being redeemed by God the Father through Jesus Christ His Son so that He might restore us all who believe in Jesus back to life, and thus back to Himself. And so the Apostle Paul says here that we are to build our faith in Him, in Jesus Christ, and not in another. Not in philosophy, and not in religion, but in Jesus Christ alone, by faith alone to the glory of the Father. And so we are to be established in the faith, (and not by tossed about by winds of doctrines; not by misled by the traditions and commandments of men) but rather as we have been Scripturally taught, as the Holy Spirit illuminates God's Word too us, so we are too grow stronger in it, as God's Word and Works are confirmed in our own lives. Therefore we always have cause for abounding in thanksgiving to God in all things and circumstances because we not only see the Lord Jesus Christ's Person in and hear the Lord's voice through His Word, but we also experience His Person and Life working in and through our lives; and thus we have great cause for abounding in thanksgiving to God for Him.

Vs. 8-10 8 Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ. 9 For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; 10 and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.

In one of the most spiritually enlightening passages in this chapter, the Apostle Paul in the span of two verses gives us a timeless warning that transcends both ages and cultures. In it Paul begins by saying: "Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ."

At the heart of what the Apostle Paul is saying is do not let anyone, through any form of philosophical or even religious thought cheat you, or more literally take you captive through their so called esoteric knowledge or so called "spiritual" worship practices. For the Gospels Message is the Complete and Perfect Incarnation of God's Wisdom and Salvation through His Son the Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore nothing needs to be added to God's Glorious Work done on the cross for our redemption from sin and death and thus our eternal salvation the moment we believe in Jesus (John 3:16; Eph. 1:13-14). Therefore do not let anyone cheat you out of it, or rob your liberty and peace while in it. For your faith is complete and perfect when it is rooted and grounded in the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore beware of anyone who says you must do this or that; or you must think this way or that in order to have your salvation completed or perfected. "For God has by one sacrifice perfected forever those who are being sanctified by faith in His Son" (Heb 10:14 addition mine, also see Acts 20:32. 26:18). Therefore do not let person take captive your faith and hope and bind it too the philosophies and empty deceit of men. All which is according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ (consider 1 Cor 1:17-31; 2:1-16). For all such things are always according to the works and unregenerate reasoning's of man, which underlies every religious and philosophical attempt of man to either save himself or change himself. And thus is only man trying to attain too innocence or acceptance before God the Father in of himself. Therefore reject all such things for you are accepted in the Beloved by God the Father the moment you believe in His Son Jesus Christ (Eph. 1:6; 2 Thess. 2:13).

Vs. 9-10 9 For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; 10 and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.

In Jesus Christ dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily. Therefore in Jesus Christ dwells all of the fullness of God, both the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Thus In Jesus Christ is all of God. Something which various religious cults, false teachers and deceived individuals down through the centuries always try to deny. The reason for their doing so is simple if God is not all In Jesus Christ and Jesus Christ all in God then there leaves room for their religious figures person or beliefs. Which may exalt angels or spirits or even so called spiritual practices as necessary and incumbent upon those who want to know God. Therefore if anyone (or angel) preaches any other Gospel than the Gospel you have received by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, crucified for our sins remission, risen from the dead on the third day for our justification, and ascended back to God the Father forty days later for our eternal redemption with Himself, then let them be accursed! (see Gal 1:6-10). For we are complete in Jesus Christ who is the head of all principality and power. Therefore do not let anyone deceive you with any sort of spiritual hierarchy by which they try to put some angel or some person before the Lord Jesus Christ as a means too Him. For if you know the Lord Jesus Christ then you know God the Father in His fullness who also indwells you by His Holy Spirit. For we are the Temple of the Lord who believe in Jesus Christ. Thus do not let anyone tell that God is here or there when He is always intimately near us all who believe in His Son Jesus! Finally that the Apostle Paul declares that the Lord Jesus Christ is the head of all principality and power means that there is not only none greater than Christ, but it means He is before them all. Therefore there is no reason for anyone who believes in Jesus to think they need to appeal too or go through another. For the Lord Jesus Christ is not only immediately accessible to all who believe in Him He is incalculably greater than all principalities and powers, whether they are in heaven or on earth. Thus whatever hierarchies of earthly dignitaries or of angels someone may expound, they are all subject too and infinitely beneath the Risen Son of God.

Colossians 1:24–29

24 I now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up in my flesh what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ, for the sake of His body, which is the church, 25 of which I became a minister according to the stewardship from God which was given to me for you, to fulfill the word of God, 26 the mystery which has been hidden from ages and from generations, but now has been revealed to His saints. 27 To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. 28 Him we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus. 29 To this end I also labor, striving according to His working which works in me mightily.

Commentary
Vs. 24 The Apostle Paul having introduced himself to the brethren at Colosse, having declared to them both his love as well as his concern for them all. Then went onto systemically expound not only the Preeminence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as the Head of the Body, but also the completeness of His sacrificial crucifixion death and shed blood on our behalf. Paul then having addressed these things now basically says of his own sufferings for the Lord and the Gospel that because he knows the Lord is working through them, bringing him as a Gospel minister to them, And not only them, but also every believer everywhere, that he rejoices in them. Rest assured then if any believer suffers for the Lord Jesus Christ's sake their suffering will not only be rewarded by Him on the last day, but it will also be used by Him in some meaningful way down here.

Vs. 25-27 The Apostle Paul then wasn't some self-appointed apostle or Gospel minister (vs. 25). Paul was chosen by the Risen Christ specifically for this high and holy purpose (Acts 9:1-19; 26:1-18). That he might not only be a minister of the mystery of God hidden from previous ages and generations, but that he might also have the privilege and honor to suffer for it. A mystery that is now being revealed to God's saints (vs. 26), that is all those who believe in Jesus Christ are not only saints of God but will have the fullness of God within themselves, which Jesus Christ's Person. In previous generations the prophets only knew that the Christ would come as a Man and suffer crucifixion death for our sins and transgressions before He would set up His Kingly throne and reign. They did not know that His Person would be, and His reign would begin, inside each and everyone who calls upon His Name (vs. 27).

Vs. 28-29 Therefore the Apostle Paul says it is Jesus Christ, Savior of sinners and Lord of all that He preaches. Not a doctrine or a dogma, not angels and spirits, not some spiritual gifting or gift. But the Lord Jesus Christ crucified and Risen from the dead who is Lord, Savior, and Judge of all men (Acts 10:42; 17:31; 1 Tim 4:10 etc.). And so Him we preach warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus (vs. 28). Therefore the Apostle Paul says: "To this end I also labor, striving according to His working which works in me mightily." vs. 29 And so Paul like every true Gospel minister labors in this, and for this very purpose, to present the Gospel to those who have not heard; but also too make disciples of Jesus Christ from all peoples everywhere, so that he might present every believing man, woman and child perfect in Christ Jesus.

The question then is have you received the Lord Jesus Christ? For that is where Christian discipleship begins, with repentance towards God, and faith in Lord Jesus Christ as testified too in the Scriptures. For when one believes in Jesus, calling upon His Name, one is immediately born-again by the Holy Spirit, and thus the Lord Jesus Christ comes and dwells within them, making our bodies the Temple of the Lord. Therefore if you would like to receive the Lord Jesus Christ simply pray in faith something like this: Dear Lord Jesus I believe that you were crucified for my sins because God loves me and that You rose again the third day to vanquish death forever for all those who believe in and receive You. Therefore I now invite You into my heart and life to be both my Lord and Savior in Jesus Christ's name, amen.

Colossians 1:19-23

19 For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell, 20 and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross. 21 And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled 22 in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight— 23 if indeed you continue in the faith, grounded and steadfast, and are not moved away from the hope of the gospel which you heard, which was preached to every creature under heaven, of which I, Paul, became a minister.

The Required Blood
Vs. 19-20 In verse eighteen the Apostle Paul declared of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ that "He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence." And so Jesus Christ is not only the Head (source, origin, Supreme Leader of the body, I.e. the church), having been the first to rise from the dead for it's inception. But He is too always have the Preeminence within it. In other words no-one before Him and no one above Him. All hierarchy, whether on earth or in heaven, ends with Him. For as the Apostle Paul declares "For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell" vs.. 19
In Jesus Christ then God the Father put all of Himself. There is then nothing of God, no Attribute, Position, or Power of God the Father that was not in God the Son (consider Isaiah 9:6). Therefore if you have Jesus Christ in your life as your Lord and Savior you have all of God the Father! That is what the Apostle Paul is saying when he says "For it pleased the Father that in Him (i.e. In Christ) all the fullness should dwell." vs. 19  Therefore you need no canonized saints or angels to appeal too or pray through, nor do you need to follow any man made and decreed ordinances and rituals in order to know God. All you need is to believe in Jesus Christ, for that is where everything Christian starts (consider John 6:29). For again everything of God and that comes from God is exclusively found In the Person  and work of Jesus Christ as testified too in the Scriptures. For Jesus Christ is not only the Divine Incarnation of God in human flesh, but it is exclusively by Jesus Christ that God the Father has chosen to reconcile all things too Himself, whether things on earth or things in heaven. For it is through the blood of Jesus Christ's cross that God the Father has made peace for us all who believe in Jesus with Himself (vs.  20). Indeed all of creation (whether in heaven or on earth) God has reconciled too Himself by the blood of Jesus Christ's cross. For it was there at Calvary, outside of Jerusalem's walls, that God the Father paid the ransom for all our sins by the crucifixion death of His only begotten Son Jesus. For as the Book of Hebrews declares "without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sins" (Heb 9:22 emphasis mine). Therefore it is only by the crucifixion death and shed blood of Jesus Christ's Sinless Mortal Person, that God the Father has made the atonement for all our souls (consider Lev 17:11). And having made the atonement for all our souls, God the Father now offers us all reconciliation and peace with Himself exclusively through His Son Jesus Christ.  For it is by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ's Person, and Him alone, that we come into a personal and living relationship with the Living God.

The Required Body
Vs. 21-22 Having declared that it is through Jesus Christ's shed blood that reconciliation and peace with God is possible for all, the Apostle Paul now addresses us all who have received the reconciliation through Christ's blood, by saying "And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled 22 in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight— " vs 21-22
Therefore from being people once alienated from God; because as Gentiles we were all once outside of a Covenant relationship with God (see Ephesians 2:11-18); or were enemies towards God in our minds, because of the wicked works done in our lives. Yet now Jesus Christ has reconciled us all who believe in Him to Himself. And this He has accomplished through the body of His flesh through death, so as to present us holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight. For the atonement having been made for our souls, Jesus Christ's own righteousness is now imputed to us (2 Cor 5:21). So that we who believe in Jesus may all appear holy, blameless and above reproach in His sight. Therefore to deny that Jesus Christ lived as a Man amongst us is to deny His Person (consider 1 John 4:2-3).

The Required Faith
Vs. 23 God then having provided the blood and the body to make the atonement for all our souls has but one requirement that He lays on us all and that is in order to apply His atoning work to our lives we must place all our faith in His Person having come in His Son the Lord Jesus Christ. Who came to suffer and die a crucifixion death in our place to make a finial and the full atonement for all our souls. Then Jesus rose from the dead three days later appearing to His disciples before ascending forty days later in their presence back to God the Father thus fulfilling the Scriptures and establishing the church (His Body of believers) with the Holy Spirits outpouring at Pentecost (Acts 2). Therefore the Apostle Paul's exhortation and warning here is that we must all continue in the faith, grounded and steadfast and not be moved away from the hope of the Gospel which we heard and received by faith in Jesus; which has been and is being preached to every creature under heaven, of which Paul was a minister. Just as you and I are both ministers and witnesses of the Lord Jesus Christ Person and life because we not only believe in Him, we also experience Him, therefore our persons and spirits must testify of Him, and the reconciliation and peace He gives to all who repent and believe in Him.

If today you have heard God's voice speaking to your spirit in some way then please seize the moment and opportunity and be reconciled to Him today. Ask the Lord Jesus Christ into your heart and life so that he might forgive you and cleanse you of all your sins and transgressions the moment you believe and  confess Him as Lord alone, He will come into you, and transform You as He promises (John 5:24; 6:40; Acts 10:43). Therefore be reconciled to God today and have remission of all your sins and life everlasting (John 3:16).
