Acts 1:9–11 The Ascension

9 Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. 10 And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, 11 who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.”

Commentary

Vs. 9 Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight.”

The Lord Jesus then haven giving His finial instructions to the apostles now while they watched is taken up into a cloud out of their sight, this then is the recounting of His Ascension back to God in heaven where He is now seated, waiting till all of His enemies are made His footstool (Psalm 110:1; Heb. 10:12-13).

Vs. 10-11 10 And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, 11 who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.”

The Scripture now tells us that as the apostles steadfastly watched Jesus being taken up to heaven, that two men stood by them in white apparel, are these then the same two men, i.e. angels that appeared at His empty tomb (Luke 24:4), it seems to me very likely that they are. Now as the eleven apostles were watching Jesus being taken up, the angels spoke to them saying, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.” Thus, even in that amazing moment, as they were captivated as these things unfold before their very eyes, the angels want to keep the apostles focus back on what needs to be done here and now. And so, they reiterate just what Jesus Himself has said and Promised, that just as He has left this world, suddenly and without any warning, so He will likewise Return! Therefore, in all joy of that glorious truth let us all be about serving the Lord Jesus Christ in whatever ways and capacities that are granted and given us while we wait on His Return!
