1 John 4:20–21

20 If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? 21 And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also.

Commentary

Vs. 20 If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?”

It’s a simple fact that if someone profess love for God and yet hates their fellow believer then they are a liar. For as the Apostle John says, “…he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?” And so once again love for one’s brother/brethren (God’s children) reveals what one is, or what they are not.

Vs. 21And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also.”

God’s commandment to love Him is not then complete unless one also loves one’s fellow believer. And thus, God has commanded us to do both.
