1 John 5:1–5

1 Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. 4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. 5 Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

Commentary

Vs. 1 Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him.”

It’s a simple fact that everyone who believes in Jesus Christ is born of God; born of His Spirit, born-again, and not by their own works or prayers, but by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ (Eph. 2:8-9). Therefore, everyone who is born of God also loves everyone who is also born of God regardless of their past lives or nation or culture or whatever else was once used to make one dislike another.

Vs. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. Here the

John now links loving the brethren with loving God and keeping God’s Commandments, specifically those commandments that seek our mutual well being.

Vs. 3For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.”

Keeping God’s commandments then by us who have been born-again is not burdensome, indeed being born-again is also realized by this, for where there was once rebellion and ignorance, there is now a desire and will and means to keep them. For that is the love of God now inside each and every one of us who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Vs. 4-5 4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. 5 Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

Therefore, whoever is born of God overcomes the world, the world with all of inducements to sin, enticements to compromise, and lies which are only propagating this worlds Satanic agenda which is trying to keep people from God, and or cause people to fall away from God. Thus, we who believe in God overcome the world by our faith, a faith which is rooted in believing that Jesus is the Son of God. And thus, everything else in our faith, and about our faith, and ultimately directs our faith, works itself out from there.
