Psalm 92 A Psalm. A Song for the Sabbath Day.

 1It is good to give thanks to the Lord,

And to sing praises to Your name, O Most High;

2To declare Your lovingkindness in the morning,

And Your faithfulness every night,

3On an instrument of ten strings,

On the lute,

And on the harp,

With harmonious sound.

4For You, Lord, have made me glad through Your work;

I will triumph in the works of Your hands.

5O Lord, how great are Your works!

Your thoughts are very deep.

6A senseless man does not know,

Nor does a fool understand this.

7When the wicked spring up like grass,

And when all the workers of iniquity flourish,

It is that they may be destroyed forever.

8But You, Lord, are on high forevermore.

9For behold, Your enemies, O Lord,

For behold, Your enemies shall perish;

All the workers of iniquity shall be scattered.

10But my horn You have exalted like a wild ox;

I have been anointed with fresh oil.

11My eye also has seen my desire on my enemies;

My ears hear my desire on the wicked

Who rise up against me.

12The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree,

He shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon.

13Those who are planted in the house of the Lord

Shall flourish in the courts of our God.

14They shall still bear fruit in old age;

They shall be fresh and flourishing,

15To declare that the Lord is upright;

He is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.

Commentary

Vs. 1-3 1It is good to give thanks to the Lord,

And to sing praises to Your name, O Most High;

2To declare Your lovingkindness in the morning,

And Your faithfulness every night,

3On an instrument of ten strings,

On the lute,

And on the harp,

With harmonious sound.

Truly it is good to give thanks to the Lord! To sing praises to the Most High! For who is more deserving of all our praise and all our gratitude than our Lord, than the Most High, who has saved and redeemed us through His Son. Therefore, brethren let us all praise Him, for His love, for His mercies, for His kindness, for His faithfulness, for His blessings and provisions for us all, for His eternal care of our souls and persons morning, day, and night. Therefore it is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to His Name, Jesus Christ’s Name. Good for our own hearts and souls, and good for all those who hear us. For these things are a witness for Him, for the truth about Him, in world that so does not know Him (vs.1). Therefore, declare His lovingkindness every morning, and His faithfulness every night. For we are never far from His love or help, His faithfulness always anchors our faith (vs. 2). And in worshiping our Lord please choose the most delightful, beautiful, brilliant sounding instruments available, to make our praise and worship to Him. For there are no restrictions on what kind of musical instruments we may use in worshiping our Lord and Savior, just as long as our worship comes together in a harmonious sound, there are no restrictions as to the form of music, or the instruments employed in our worship (vs. 3). For the whole emphasis here is on our worship being heartfeltly expressed, not on musical styles and instruments. Yes, drums and cymbals, all percussion instruments can be employed. Just let your worship be heartfelt and with reverence and it will be accepted

Vs. 4 For You, Lord, have made me glad through Your work;

I will triumph in the works of Your hands.

Truly the Lord has made me glad through His work, yes in saving me and bringing me to life through His Son Jesus Christ, but also through His ongoing transformation of my person through His Holy Spirit. The ongoing sanctification of my person that will only be completed when I am finally at home in heaven (Phil. 4:13). Therefore, I will triumph in the work of our Lord's hands, for it is His hand that continually upholds me, even in the face of overwhelming opposition.

Vs. 5-6 5O Lord, how great are Your works!

Your thoughts are very deep.

6A senseless man does not know,

Nor does a fool understand this.

When we reflect upon the Lord we are in awe of Him! For being in awe of the Lord comes through observing the Lord, seeing His great and mighty works. Indeed, when one’s eyes are opened, they will not only see the Lord, but they will understand His Word, and when one does one is most awed and thankful. In contrast to that though is the senseless person who does not know the Lord, nor His Works, nor His ways. For they cannot bear His Word therefore they only live by their godless desires and reasonings, which always leads them to error. Same with the fool who always thinks themselves wise while only walking in darkness, while only living completely devoid of God’s illuminating light and life, they then are only “wise” in their own yes, no one else. Their ways and "wisdom" then perishes with them.

"Behold the fear of the Lord that is wisdom,

And to depart from evil is understanding"  Job 28:28

Vs. 7When the wicked spring up like grass,

And when all the workers of iniquity flourish,

It is that they may be destroyed forever.

God’s Word now has a word for them all! That though such will spring up like the grass and all the workers of iniquity will flourish; for in this world they are “wisdom” of it. Yet it is only so that they may be destroyed forever. God’s silence for a season is never His indifference to them. Their brief time and exaltation is now, but His Word and His Judgment is forever!

Vs. 8-9 8But You, Lord, are on high forevermore.

9For behold, Your enemies, O Lord,

For behold, Your enemies shall perish;

All the workers of iniquity shall be scattered.

The Lord is now exalted above the man and woman of the earth, whose lives, beauty and vitality are all very temporary, for He alone is the Lord set on high forevermore. Therefore, the Scripture promises that all the enemies of the Lord shall perish, and all the workers of iniquity shall be scattered. Even though they united themselves down here in their godless defense of vileness and sin, yet when God judges them, they and their works will be a forever forgotten thing.

Vs. 10-11 10But my horn You have exalted like a wild ox;

I have been anointed with fresh oil.

11My eye also has seen my desire on my enemies;

My ears hear my desire on the wicked

Who rise up against me.

With the assured destruction of the wicked given. The horn of all who live righteously is now exalted, our vitality now being compared with the strength of a wild ox. Indeed, being anointed with fresh oil could be thought of as Holy Spirit regeneration of everyone of us who repents and believes, for that is what the Gospel offers us all, a chance to be born-again and live as God would have us all live and be. If you are a sinner now you do not have to die one, you can be saved from your sins and ultimately be saved from the wrath to come, come to the Lord Jesus Christ and find life, peace, rest, and renewal for your soul (Matt. 11:28-30). Justice too is also assured us all who live righteously, that God will give us justice. For ultimately everyone who has come to Christ will see their desires on their enemies, will hear with their ears their desires on the wicked, will see justice done to all who rise against us, amen.

Vs. 12-15 12The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree,

He shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon.

13Those who are planted in the house of the Lord

Shall flourish in the courts of our God.

14They shall still bear fruit in old age;

They shall be fresh and flourishing,

15To declare that the Lord is upright;

He is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.

God’s promise of the righteous flourishing is now declared. For with all the wicked judged and removed from Christ’s Kingdom it will be a place where all those who know Him shall flourish like a palm tree. Indeed, we will all grow tall and strong like the ancient cedars of Lebanon (vs. 12). For we will be planted in the house of the Lord and we shall all flourish in the courts of our God (vs. 13). Even in our old age we will still be bearing fruit, and our person will be fresh and flourishing, to declare that the Lord is upright, he is my rock and there is no unrighteousness with Him.
