12 The next day a great multitude that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13 took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out: “Hosanna! ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ The King of Israel!” 14 Then Jesus, when He had found a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written: 15 “Fear not, daughter of Zion; Behold, your King is coming, Sitting on a donkey’s colt.” 16 His disciples did not understand these things at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about Him and that they had done these things to Him. 17 Therefore the people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of his tomb and raised him from the dead, bore witness. 18 For this reason the people also met Him, because they heard that He had done this sign. 19 The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, “You see that you are accomplishing nothing. Look, the world has gone after Him!” 20 Now there were certain Greeks among those who came up to worship at the feast. 21 Then they came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” 22 Philip came and told Andrew, and in turn Andrew and Philip told Jesus.
Commentary
Vs. 12-13 12 The next day a great multitude that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13 took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out: “Hosanna! ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ The King of Israel!”
With the people now awakened to who Jesus is, by His having raised Lazarus from the dead, Jesus now moves towards Jerusalem. Now when those there who had come from all over to celebrate the Passover heard that Jesus was now coming to Jerusalem, they went out of Jerusalem to meet and greet Jesus as their Messiah and King. And so, it was that a great multitude came out and lined the road leading up to Jerusalem and having taking the branches of palm trees in their hands they began to wave these before Him, loudly saying, Hosanna! ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ The King of Israel!” Vs. 13 It’s all an incredible scene, a move of God, which was fulfilling the Scripture and taking place right outside of the walls of Jerusalem! For by ascribing Psalm 118:26 to Jesus, they were rightfully now declaring (and asking) Jesus Christ as their Messiah and King to save them! Something that He will do, but first He must suffer their rejection before He can bring their restoration and salvation!
Vs. 14-15 14 Then Jesus, when He had found a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written: 15 “Fear not, daughter of Zion; Behold, your King is coming, Sitting on a donkey’s colt.”
Jesus then in accord with the Scripture is now placed on a young donkey, as it is written of Him, for it states: “Fear not, daughter of Zion; Behold, your King is coming, Sitting on a donkey’s colt.” (see Zechariah 9:9 also Isaiah 40:9)
Vs. 16 “His disciples did not understand these things at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about Him and that they had done these things to Him.”
Though this was clearly a move of God, the disciples did not immediately understand these things, and so not until Jesus was glorified did, they remember that these things were written about Him, and that they had done these things to Him. In them then we the progression and growth of truth faith, that not all of Gods Revelations and Truths, though given us all by the Holy Spirit, do not come to light to us all at once.
Vs. 17-18 17 Therefore the people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of his tomb and raised him from the dead, bore witness. 18 For this reason the people also met Him, because they heard that He had done this sign.”
While the disciples were not understanding all that was taking place there were those there who had also seen Jesus raise Lazarus from the dead and so when they saw Jesus riding towards Jerusalem on the donkey they went and told others (i.e. bore witness) that this is He who raised the man Lazarus from the dead! And so, you can imagine the multitudes of people coming from every direction lining the road to Jerusalem seeking to see and meet Jesus!
Vs. 19 The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, “You see that you are accomplishing nothing. Look, the world has gone after Him!”
When the Pharisees saw all people’s excitement and the great uproar over Jesus’ now coming up to Jerusalem, and that they themselves could do nothing to stop it, or nor dissuade people from wanting to participate in it, they said amongst themselves, “You see that you are accomplishing nothing. Look, the world has gone after Him!”
Vs. 20-22 20 Now there were certain Greeks among those who came up to worship at the feast. 21 Then they came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” 22 Philip came and told Andrew, and in turn Andrew and Philip told Jesus.
Now some Greeks (i.e. Greeks who had converted to Judaism), who had also come to worship at the Passover feast who must have heard about Jesus and seeing what was happening, they too wanted to see Jesus. Therefore, they came to Philip, Jesus’ disciple, who along with his brother Andrew was from Bethsaida of Galilee. Now Galilee was a region mixed with Jews and Gentiles and so Philipp must have been recognized by some of them, and so their approaching Philip and asking to see Jesus would’ve been most natural for them and him. For generally Jews had no direct dealings with Gentiles. Philip then acting as a go between for them then went to Andrew and consulted with him, before they in turn went to Jesus and told Him. In some ways then this innocent encounter between Philip and those Greeks wanting to see Jesus foreshadows, (as other commentators have noted), the coming of the Gentiles on mass to the Lord Jesus Christ!
