John 13:31–35

31 So, when he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Him. 32 If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and glorify Him immediately. 33 Little children, I shall be with you a little while longer. You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come,’ so now I say to you. 34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Commentary

Vs. 31 So, when he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Him.

With Judas gone out to betray Him, now Jesus can finish what He came forth to do, and that is be our Lord and Savior, but also and most importantly be the Atonement for all our sins. For it is impossible for mankind to redeem themselves, and so out of His great love for us all the Lord Jesus Christ took this all upon Himself. Therefore, it is in Jesus Christ’s Crucifixion death, Resurrection from the dead, and Ascension back to God the Father in heaven to sit on His throne victorious over sin, Satan and death, and thus having restored believing humanity back to God Himself that both He and God the Father are glorified! Glorified heaven and Glorified on earth!

Vs. 32 If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and glorify Him immediately.”

Because God the Father is glorified in His Son, glorified by His Son Jesus Christ’s Perfect Life, Love, and now Suffering Sacrificial Death, God will glorify His Son in Himself, and this He will do immediately, because down here Jesus had/has neither glory nor honor befitting His Holy Person. But up there in heaven God the Father has made His Son the Person to receive all Glory and Honor for His Perfect obedience to Himself!

Vs. 33 Little children, I shall be with you a little while longer. You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come,’ so now I say to you.

Jesus now uses a term of endearment towards His disciples to tell them that He is going away. Before Jesus called them His friends, but now He calls them little children just like a father would. Now unlike when Jesus told the Jews that where He was going, they could not come, (that is come to Him in heaven because of their unbelief about Him), Jesus is now saying this to His disciples as a statement that He must now face not only the Cross alone, but also death itself alone, before He could bring us the victory over it all! Therefore, when Jesus had done this, He would come to them, first in His Resurrection body, then later when He had Ascended back to God in heaven through His Holy Spirit dwelling inside of each one of us who believe in Him!

Vs. 34-35 34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

In preparing the disciples for His departure Jesus now gives us a new commandment, that we love one another as He has loved us, emphasizing that we love one another (vs. 35). For there is nothing greater in human experience than to give and receive love, especially Divine love. Therefore, there is nothing greater than any of us can do as Jesus’ disciples than to walk in love towards each (1 Cor. 13). For as Jesus says here it reveals His true disciples to everyone. For anyone can give or serve or be zealous for this or for that, but only those who have been born-again by God’s Spirit through Christ’s love can love as He does! Love then for each other is the command than that we must always keep at the heart of everything that we do!
