John 7:40–44

40 Therefore many from the crowd, when they heard this saying, said, “Truly this is the Prophet.” 41 Others said, “This is the Christ.” But some said, “Will the Christ come out of Galilee? 42 Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the seed of David and from the town of Bethlehem, where David was?” 43 So there was a division among the people because of Him. 44 Now some of them wanted to take Him, but no one laid hands on Him.

Commentary

Vs. 40-42 40 Therefore many from the crowd, when they heard this saying, said, “Truly this is the Prophet.” 41 Others said, “This is the Christ.” But some said, “Will the Christ come out of Galilee? 42 Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the seed of David and from the town of Bethlehem, where David was?”

Now when Jesus cried out on the last day of the feast: “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” John 7:37-38 Many people in the crowd were spiritually awakened! For they began to say, “Truly this is the Prophet.” Vs. 40 While others said, “This is the Christ.” Vs. 41 However mixed in amongst those who began to see and perceive who Jesus truly is, were those who remained blinded to Him, who following the line of reasoning of their scribes and Pharisees said, “Will the Christ come out of Galilee? 42 Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the seed of David and from the town of Bethlehem, where David was?” Vs. 41-42 Now the Lord Jesus Christ did indeed come from the seed of David and from the town of Bethlehem, for that was were He was born, however Jesus Christ did not grow up in Bethlehem, (as they were assuming he must), but rather He first dwelt in Egypt to fulfill the Scripture which said, “out of Egypt I called My son” (Num 24:11; Hosea 11:1). Then He grew up in Nazareth of Galilee to fulfill the Scripture which said: “He shall be called a Nazarene” (Jud. 13:5). And so, by focusing in on only one prophecy about Christ, they missed the whole prophetic picture, which clearly foretells and portrays the Lord Jesus Christ’s Person and Life very accurately, and thus without dispute or question.

Vs. 43-44 43 So there was a division among the people because of Him. 44 Now some of them wanted to take Him, but no one laid hands on Him.

And so, with these conflicting points of view amongst the Jews there was a division amongst them about who Jesus was. “Now some of them wanted to take Him, but no one laid hands on Him.” Vs. 44 Once again then some of the Jews wanted to take Jesus, that is take Him by force of arms, however no one laid hands on Him, because of Jesus Words.
