1 After the uproar had ceased, Paul called the disciples to himself, embraced them, and departed to go to Macedonia. 2 Now when he had gone over that region and encouraged them with many words, he came to Greece 3 and stayed three months. And when the Jews plotted against him as he was about to sail to Syria, he decided to return through Macedonia. 4 And Sopater of Berea accompanied him to Asia—also Aristarchus and Secundus of the Thessalonians, and Gaius of Derbe, and Timothy, and Tychicus and Trophimus of Asia. 5 These men, going ahead, waited for us at Troas. 6 But we sailed away from Philippi after the Days of Unleavened Bread, and in five days joined them at Troas, where we stayed seven days.
Vs. 1 “After the uproar had ceased, Paul called the disciples to himself, embraced them, and departed to go to Macedonia.”
With the uprising now diffused, and Gaius and Aristarchus, Paul’s Macedonians travel companions, now safe, the Apostle now calls the brethren there to himself and embraces them. For his concern was always for their (and our welfare and wellbeing). Just as any real shepherd of the Lord Jesus Christ’s is for his flock’s well-being. And so, having expressed his love for them he now departs for Macedonia to see the brethren there.
Vs. 2-3 2 Now when he had gone over that region and encouraged them with many words, he came to Greece 3 and stayed three months. And when the Jews plotted against him as he was about to sail to Syria, he decided to return through Macedonia.
The Apostle Paul thus now travels through all the region of Macedonia encouraging the brethren with many words, and sharing with them as much of his wonderful knowledge of the love and grace of God given us through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, as each stop would permit. Having thus strengthened the believers in Macedonia, Paul now moves onto Greece, staying three for three months; where consensus has him staying at Corinth and writing both the Book of Romans and possibly Galatians at this time. Now it was when he was about to depart and sail across the Aegean Sea onto Syria that word came to him of a plot of the Jews against his life, and so he took a land route back through Macedonia.
Vs. 4 “And Sopater of Berea accompanied him to Asia—also Aristarchus and Secundus of the Thessalonians, and Gaius of Derbe, and Timothy, and Tychicus and Trophimus of Asia.”
During this time the Apostle Paul had several disciples accompany him, Sopater of Berea to accompanied him to Asia, Aristarchus and Secundus who were Thessalonians, Gaius from Derbe, and Timothy, and Tychicus and Trophimus from of the brethren in Asia.
Vs. 5-6 5 These men, going ahead, waited for us at Troas. 6 But we sailed away from Philippi after the Days of Unleavened Bread, and in five days joined them at Troas, where we stayed seven days.
Those men then went ahead of the Apostle Paul and Luke (i.e., the “us”) and waited for their arrival at Troas (which is mentioned in 2 Cor. 2:12-13). While the Apostle Paul waited for the Days of Unleavened Bread to pass (a Jewish commanded festival which he likely observed) before departing from Philippi for Troas, where he and those with him stayed seven days.
