Acts 20:7–12

7 Now on the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul, ready to depart the next day, spoke to them and continued his message until midnight. 8 There were many lamps in the upper room where they were gathered together. 9 And in a window sat a certain young man named Eutychus, who was sinking into a deep sleep. He was overcome by sleep; and as Paul continued speaking, he fell down from the third story and was taken up dead. 10 But Paul went down, fell on him, and embracing him said, “Do not trouble yourselves, for his life is in him.” 11 Now when he had come up, had broken bread and eaten, and talked a long while, even till daybreak, he departed. 12 And they brought the young man in alive, and they were not a little comforted.

Commentary

Vs. 7Now on the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul, ready to depart the next day, spoke to them and continued his message until midnight.”

And so, it was while at Troas; (a seaport city on the Aegean Sea coast in northwest Asia minor, founded by Alexander the Great’s Successor, Antigonus, Troas was apparently named after the ancient city of Troy which was about fifteen miles away); that the Apostle Paul on the first day of the week (according to the Christian Calendar) came together with the brethren there to break bread (that is to keep the Lord’s Supper in remembrance of Him and what He has done for us). And so, Paul knowing he was going to depart the next day. began to speak his message to them, and continued doing so until midnight, trying to impart as much Spirit knowledge as he could to them in the short time that he had there with them. For there were no Bibles, no New Testament yet written, there were simply Spirit called and equipped Apostles, Prophets, Teachers and Evangelists who were by the Holy Spirit all saying and reaffirming the same Spiritual truths given us by God. And so, the Apostle Paul new the great importance of what he was doing and saying, and one day would be recording for us all, so that we all might be strengthened and unified in our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Vs. 8-9 8 There were many lamps in the upper room where they were gathered together. 9 And in a window sat a certain young man named Eutychus, who was sinking into a deep sleep. He was overcome by sleep; and as Paul continued speaking, he fell down from the third story and was taken up dead.

And so, it was that as the Apostle Paul continued his message well into the night there were many lamps lit in the upper room where he was speaking and where they had gathered together (vs. 8). And sitting in the window was a certain young man named Eutychus, who in spite of this, (or maybe because of it, i.e., smoke or CO2 from the oil lamps), he became overcome with sleep, and as Paul was still speaking this poor young man fell down from the third story and was taken up dead (vs. 9).

Vs. 10-12 10 But Paul went down, fell on him, and embracing him said, “Do not trouble yourselves, for his life is in him.” 11 Now when he had come up, had broken bread and eaten, and talked a long while, even till daybreak, he departed. 12 And they brought the young man in alive, and they were not a little comforted.

However, the Apostle Paul went down to him, and fell on him and embracing him, Paul said, “Do not trouble yourselves, for his life is in him.” Indicating that the Apostle Paul had restored the young to life, just as the Apostle Peter had restored Dorcas to life (Acts 9:36-42). Having then restored Eutychus to life, the Apostle Paul went back upstairs and celebrated the agape feast with all the brethren, breaking bread and speaking to them informally of many things, even till daybreak, and so it was that in the morning he departed, and all the brethren were greatly comforted that the young man Eutychus was alive and well.
