Psalm 45 To the Chief Musician. Set to Contemplation of the Sons of Korah. A Song of Love.

 1My heart is overflowing with a good theme;

I recite my composition concerning the King;

My tongue is the pen of a ready writer.

2You are fairer than the sons of men;

Grace is poured upon Your lips;

Therefore God has blessed You forever.

3Gird Your sword upon Your thigh,

O Mighty One,

With Your glory and Your majesty.

4And in Your majesty ride prosperously because of truth, humility, and righteousness;

And Your right hand shall teach You awesome things.

5Your arrows are sharp in the heart of the King’s enemies;

The peoples fall under You.

6Your throne, O God, is forever and ever;

A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom.

7You love righteousness and hate wickedness;

Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness more than Your companions.

8All Your garments are scented with myrrh and aloes and cassia,

Out of the ivory palaces, by which they have made You glad.

9Kings’ daughters are among Your honorable women;

At Your right hand stands the queen in gold from Ophir.

10Listen, O daughter,

Consider and incline your ear;

Forget your own people also, and your father’s house;

11So the King will greatly desire your beauty;

Because He is your Lord, worship Him.

12And the daughter of Tyre will come with a gift;

The rich among the people will seek your favor.

13The royal daughter is all glorious within the palace;

Her clothing is woven with gold.

14She shall be brought to the King in robes of many colors;

The virgins, her companions who follow her, shall be brought to You.

15With gladness and rejoicing they shall be brought;

They shall enter the King’s palace.

16Instead of Your fathers shall be Your sons,

Whom You shall make princes in all the earth.

17I will make Your name to be remembered in all generations;

Therefore the people shall praise You forever and ever.

Commentary

Vs. 1My heart is overflowing with a good theme;

I recite my composition concerning the King;

My tongue is the pen of a ready writer.

This psalm comes from an overflowing heart, from one who has been endowed with the Holy Spirit, who by His wisdom and knowledge has been given foresight and foreknowledge of the King. Therefore, the Psalmist now eagerly writes down all that is been given him.

Vs. 2You are fairer than the sons of men;

Grace is poured upon Your lips;

Therefore, God has blessed You forever.

To begin then the King is seen as fairer than all the sons of men, that is His beauty, His radiance surpass all the kings and nobles of the earth. Not only does His majesty surpass all, but grace has been poured upon His lips, and so His speech is not only profoundly wise, being filled with grace, but His Word is utterly captivating, holding all attentive to hear Him. Therefore because of His excellence in speaking all things rightly and truly, God has blessed Him forever.

Vs. 3-5 3Gird Your sword upon Your thigh, O Mighty One,

With Your glory and Your majesty.

4And in Your majesty ride prosperously because of truth, humility, and righteousness;

And Your right hand shall teach You awesome things.

5Your arrows are sharp in the heart of the King’s enemies;

The peoples fall under You.

From seeing the Lord Jesus Christ in His Glorified State ruling as the King of kings is His court, to now seeing Him as the Avenger of His people (Rev. 6:10-11; 19:1-5) to the time of His Return, when He leads the armies of heaven against the people of God’s wrath (Rev. 19:11-21). And so, the Word of God cries out calling Him the Mighty One, the Lord Jesus Christ, to gird on His sword and in His majesty to ride prosperously because of truth, humility, and righteousness. Such then is the veracity and skill with which the Lord Jesus yields it that the sight is utterly awesome to behold! There is much then that is learned in His Judgement, for none of His enemies’ escape, and none delivers themselves, they all fall under Him (vs. 5). The Victory and Triumph then is all His, and everlasting joy and peace shall be ours!

Vs. 6-7 6Your throne, O God, is forever and ever;

A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom.

7You love righteousness and hate wickedness;

Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness more than Your companions.

From the glories of His Victory on the Battlefield to now His beginning His Reign in the New Jerusalem we get a foretaste of it here. Thus, the Voice of God the Father is now heard crying out to God His Son, saying: “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom. 7You love righteousness and hate wickedness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness more than Your companions.” (See Heb. 1:8-9).

In addressing His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ as God, God the Father is declaring His Son’s Everlasting Status as God, as His Equal, as He has always been. And Yet the Lord Jesus Christ has always submitted Himself to God the Father as His Son. Therefore, He alone is to be trusted to rule in righteousness. for that is the scepter of His Kingdom, the very thing upon which His Kingdom is established by Him. For He loves righteousness and hates wickedness, therefore He rules without showing partiality, without hypocrisy, without corruption, injustice or evil. Therefore because of His love for righteousness, God Himself has anointed Him with the oil of gladness more than His companions. Now as to anointing, in O.T. times the holy anointing oil that was poured upon Israel’s priests (Exodus 30:22-25), but here it signifies His Anointing as Gods Everlasting King and Priest.

Vs. 8All Your garments are scented with myrrh and aloes and cassia,

Out of the ivory palaces, by which they have made You glad.

And as for His apparel it is here described as being scented with the finest fragrances, coming to Him out of ivory palaces, indicating the extreme opulence and purity with which His Person is and His work is done.

Vs. 9 Kings’ daughters are among Your honorable women;

At Your right hand stands the queen in gold from Ophir.

His court is also filled with the most noblest of woman, daughters of kings are there. But who the queen is remains a mystery, since there will be none, and so in all likelihood if this verse applies to Christ’s Reign, it would be symbolic, and it may be indicating the church who is the bride of Christ.

Vs. 10-11 10Listen, O daughter,

Consider and incline your ear;

Forget your own people also, and your father’s house;

11So the King will greatly desire your beauty;

Because He is your Lord, worship Him.

The Word of God's call here reminds one of the widowed Ruth, who forsook her own people and "gods" and clung to Naomi and came to Israel with her (Ruth 1:16-17; 2:11-12). And so it was there that she married Boaz, who begot Obed, who begot Jessie, who begot David the king, God having a plan for her after her tragedy as well (Ruth 4:1-17). Now for all of us who also believe this is every Christians call to put the Lord Jesus Christ above all national identity, above all family ties, and if need be sever them if they will keep us back from following Him (consider Matt. 10:34-39; Luke 4:26-33).

Vs. 12-13 12And the daughter of Tyre will come with a gift;

The rich among the people will seek your favor.

13The royal daughter is all glorious within the palace;

Her clothing is woven with gold.

Not only will the King be honored by all, but so will His bride. For the daughter of Tyre will come with a gift to honor her. To understand how important this is Tyre in ancient times was the most opulent city of the Mediterranean, renowned for its goods and wares which came from all around the known world. Therefore for it to be willingly subservient to His courts indicates His supremacy in all the earth. Indeed, the Scripture says even the rich among the people will court her favor. Thus the royal daughter now is seen as glorious within the Kings palace, for even her clothing is woven with gold!

Vs. 14-15 14She shall be brought to the King in robes of many colors;

The virgins, her companions who follow her, shall be brought to You.

15With gladness and rejoicing they shall be brought;

They shall enter the King’s palace.

The virgin bride of Christ is now seen wearing a rob of many colors all which reminds one of David’s own virgin daughter Tamar’s apparel (2 Sam.13:18). Therefore the virgins, her companions who follow her, shall also be brought before Him, with gladness and rejoicing they shall be brought, and they shall enter the Kings palace. All which reminds one of the Shulamite in the Song of Solomon (figurative of the bride of Christ) and the daughters of Jerusalem who follow her. And so it is, they with gladness and rejoicing shall all be brought before the King in His Palace!

Vs. 16Instead of Your fathers shall be Your sons,

Whom You shall make princes in all the earth.

The King then have taken up His Throne will now have instead of the patriarchs, all His sons to be His princes in all the earth (consider Rev. 1:6; 5:10).

Vs. 17I will make Your name to be remembered in all generations;

Therefore the people shall praise You forever and ever.

God the Father having greatly honored and established His Son, now promises Him to make His name to be remembered in all generations. “Therefore the people shall praise You forever and ever.” Amen!
