Psalm 46

 1God is our refuge and strength,

A very present help in trouble.

2Therefore we will not fear,

Even though the earth be removed,

And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;

3Though its waters roar and be troubled,

Though the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah

4There is a river whose streams shall make glad the city of God,

The holy place of the tabernacle of the Most High.

5God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved;

God shall help her, just at the break of dawn.

6The nations raged, the kingdoms were moved;

He uttered His voice, the earth melted.

7The Lord of hosts is with us;

The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah

8Come, behold the works of the Lord,

Who has made desolations in the earth.

9He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;

He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two;

He burns the chariot in the fire.

10Be still, and know that I am God;

I will be exalted among the nations,

I will be exalted in the earth!

11The Lord of hosts is with us;

The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah

Commentary

Vs. 1-3 1God is our refuge and strength,

A very present help in trouble.

2Therefore we will not fear,

Even though the earth be removed,

And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;

3Though its waters roar and be troubled,

Though the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah

If there is one verse that every believer should keep and hold fast in their heart it is this, “God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.

For by it not only does our faith and confidence grow, but we have everlasting consolation and comfort, not only then, but here and now! “Therefore we will not fear…” Even when the whole world (our own world) is about to be turned upside down, for that is what is being said in verses two and three. Therefore, we will not fear,

Even though the earth be removed,

And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;

3Though its waters roar and be troubled,

Though the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah

Therefore though the land be removed, and mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; so that there is no place for us to escape the floods of ungodliness, wickedness, and violence, to escape societal upheavals, or personal troubles and tragedies or life altering events that are only in this life, we will not fear, for God is with us He is our refuge and strength, He is a very present help for us in our troubles!

Vs. 4-5 4There is a river whose streams shall make glad the city of God,

The holy place of the tabernacle of the Most High.

5God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved;

God shall help her, just at the break of dawn.

What prepares us to face today is knowing what is coming in the future! And in the millennial Kingdom there will be a river that flows out from the Temple in the city of God, where God is dwelling in His holy place (Ezekiel 47:1-12). Therefore with God in the midst of her, in Jerusalem, she shall not be moved by anyone or anything, for God shall help her, and in perfect timing He shall save her!

Vs. 6The nations raged, the kingdoms were moved;

He uttered His voice, the earth melted.

Therefore though the nations raged against her, and specifically at the end of the Millennial reign they will rage against her, for in one last finial assault and rebellion against the Lord with Satan leading them they will seek to overthrow Him. Nonetheless when God utters His voice, they and their rage will be brought to nothing, and their earth in which they trusted in will be as though it had never been!

Vs. 7The Lord of hosts is with us;

The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah

Confidence then is ours, for the Lord of hosts is with us, the One who has created the heavens and earth, who rules them and all things in them, He is with us, therefore we need not fear! For the God of Jacob who choose and redeemed him in ancient times, has also chosen us, He is our refuge both now and then!

 Vs. 8-9 8Come, behold the works of the Lord,

Who has made desolations in the earth.

9He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;

He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two;

He burns the chariot in the fire.

Therefore we are all invited to see the works of the Lord, especially after He has dealt with Satan and those who followed him forever. For He alone makes wars to cease to the end of the earth, He alone destroys all their weapons of war in which they trust. For now, He is seated in His Glorious Majesty on His Holy Throne where we can all see His enemies defeated by Him in every direction, for He has caused all their war and rage to cease forever!

Vs. 10Be still, and know that I am God;

I will be exalted among the nations,

I will be exalted in the earth!

Because His Victory is certain, He now tells us to "Be still, and now that I am God, I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth! Therefore we do not have to fret and worry about what this world does, or where it is going, for our God is Sovereign, He will be exalted among the nations, He will be exalted in the earth. "For the whole world will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the seas." Habakkuk 2:14 Therefore, He now tells us to put our worries and fears away, for what He allows the world to do now, He will never allow them to do anymore then.

Vs. 11The Lord of hosts is with us;

The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah

There is then nothing that can remove Him or us. Neither principality nor power, nor anything in heaven or on earth can ever take us from Him, for the Lord of the heavens is with us, the God of Jacob who redeemed and preserved him is our refuge! Selah.
