Psalm 47 To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of the Sons of Korah.

 1Oh, clap your hands, all you peoples!

Shout to God with the voice of triumph!

2For the Lord Most High is awesome;

He is a great King over all the earth.

3He will subdue the peoples under us,

And the nations under our feet.

4He will choose our inheritance for us,

The excellence of Jacob whom He loves. Selah

5God has gone up with a shout,

The Lord with the sound of a trumpet.

6Sing praises to God, sing praises!

Sing praises to our King, sing praises!

7For God is the King of all the earth;

Sing praises with understanding.

8God reigns over the nations;

God sits on His holy throne.

9The princes of the people have gathered together,

The people of the God of Abraham.

For the shields of the earth belong to God; He is greatly exalted.

Preamble

This is another great Psalm from the sons of Korah. All but Psalms 40, 41 and 43 from Psalms forty to fifty are given us through them. Previously Psalm 44 told of Israel being defeated by their enemies, then, while 45-46 are Messianic meaning they foretell of the Christ’s Coming, Future Victory, and Reign. And so here in Psalm 47 we get a call to worship our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ not only then, when He has established His Kingdom, but here and now! For faith does not wait for God’s Word fulfillment, rather it lives in His fulfillment of it here and now!

Commentary

Vs. 1-2 1Oh, clap your hands, all you peoples!

Shout to God with the voice of triumph!

2For the Lord Most High is awesome;

He is a great King over all the earth.

In prophetically foreseeing the Lord Jesus Christ’s Victory over the unbelieving nations and now His Reign, the sons of Korah exude with all praise wanting us all to worship the Lord with them,

For the Lord Most High is awesome;

He is a great King over all the earth.

On that Day then the Lord Most High who alone is awesome will be the great King who rules over the all earth! This then is the worship call that goes out to all. For it is only the Lord Jesus Christ’s Person and His Presence within us, and now His Victorious Reign over us that brings this uncontainable worship out from us all who believe in Him.

Vs. 3He will subdue the peoples under us,

And the nations under our feet.

Once again with eyes of certain faith the sons of Korah see the Lord’s subduing the peoples under us, a reference to His doing so specifically for Israel, doing what they could not do for themselves, but also His doing so for all of us who believe in Him, for all who come out of the Tribulation period, for we will all reign with Him (2 Tim 2:12; Rev. 20:6).

Vs. 4He will choose our inheritance for us,

The excellence of Jacob whom He loves. Selah

As in the ancient days when the Lord during Joshua’s tenure choose the twelve tribes of Israel inheritance for them, so He will do again for them during His Millennial Reign (Ezekiel 48:1-29) and us all in His everlasting Kingdom!

 Vs. 5God has gone up with a shout,

The Lord with the sound of a trumpet.

Having vanquished His enemies, the Lord is now seen ascending up too His Throne amidst the shouts of great jubilation and joy from all the peoples, and so with the sound of a trumpet He leads us home.

Vs. 6-8 6Sing praises to God, sing praises!

Sing praises to our King, sing praises!

7For God is the King of all the earth;

Sing praises with understanding.

8God reigns over the nations;

God sits on His holy throne.

Therefore a joyous call to sing praises to our King the Lord Jesus Christ who is now fully received by Israel as her King, and who now rules over the nations, fills the earth! For the Lord Jesus Christ is God and He is the King over all the earth as He now reigns over the nations sitting on His Holy Throne. This then is the Day that both the believing church and Israel have long been waiting for, been created for, to serve, worship and glorify the Lord in His Kingdom and forever Regin!

Vs. 9The princes of the people have gathered together,

The people of the God of Abraham.

For the shields of the earth belong to God; He is greatly exalted.

This then is a foretelling of the great tribunal, the great gathering of God's people before Lord on His Throne. And so it is that the princes of the people (all who are of noble and high stature) have gathered themselves together with the people of the God of Abraham; that is everyone who like Abraham believed God, and thus it was accounted to him, and now us all as righteousness, are now all gathered together as one. Complete and single minded in our devotion towards Him and worship of Him we now stand united before Him as One as His chosen people. "For the shields of the earth belong to the Lord", that is all the nations rulers, all their authority and power, all their glory and might, have now been turned over to Him! Therefore, the Lord Jesus Christ is greatly exalted!
