1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with
God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God.
Commentary
The Gospel of John begins with the profound declaration that in the beginning was the Word, (i.e. Logos), that is all Wisdom, all Knowledge, all Understanding, existed in a Person, and that Person was with God, and that Person is God. Before there ever was a creation of anything, the Pre-incarnate Word existed with God. Before heaven and earth were created, before stars and galaxies’ and universes were created, before any angelic beings were created, and certainly before mankind and all the creatures on earth were created and brought into being by God, the Word existed as a Person, Eternally and Gloriously with God, for the Word was with God, and the Word is God! Thus, the Word spoken of here is not a philosophy, it is not a “creed”, the Word spoken of here is God Himself in the Person of His Son! For He was in the beginning with God! God’s Wisdom then is Personified and Magnified to all in the Person of His Son! And that is what is being declared here in Johns Gospel. That God the Father and God the Son (i.e. the Word) were together as One in the beginning.
