John 1:9–13

9 That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. 11 He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. 12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: 13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

Commentary
Vs. 9That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.”

Jesus Christ alone then is the true Light which comes from God, who alone gives light to everyone in this world. Thus, without favoritism, nor partiality Jesus Christ gives light to everyone in the world, for He alone is the Light of the World that comes from God (John 8:12). Jesus Christ alone then illuminates the pathway to God, and our being reconciled to Him.

Vs. 10He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.”

And though He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, yet the world did not know Him. For the world has many “gods”, many philosophies, many ideologies, beliefs, practices and “faiths” which they trust in and live by, but all these have only born out of the sin nature, or have been brought into being under the “tutelage” of Satan, the ruler of this world. And so, there is a veil cast over the world which covers the eyes of this world. Therefore, because they hold to these they abide in darkness, alienated from the Life and Light of God that is only found in the Lord Jesus Christ. Verse ten then is a stunning statement on the depraved/deceived state of the world, that it did not know the One through whom we were all created, who came into being in Sinless human flesh to reveal God to us all.

Vs. 11He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.”

Not only did the Living Word of God come to humanity in Sinless human flesh (being born of a virgin, thus He was separated from the sin nature which we all inherit through Adam, the first man) but He came to Israel first. For this is God’s foreordained plan revealed in the Scriptures that through the nation of Israel whom He created, He would raise up the Savior of the world! And yet when they rejected Him, and instead Crucified Him, God’s plan was not thwarted, for their doing so only helped fulfill the Word of God so that He might suffer and die on the Cross for the redemption of many.

Vs. 12-13 12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: 13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

Therefore verse 12-13 reveals who the people of God truly are. And that is those who receive the Lord Jesus Christ, who believe in His Name, for these are the true people of God, whether they are Jews or Gentiles. Not whether one was born a Jew or into a Christian home, not whether one was water baptized by immersion or any other means, not even whether one is a member in Christian church, but only those who received Him, who believe in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ are given the right to become the children of God. For the Cross of Christ is the great equalizer because through it we who believe in Him are all redeemed on an equal footing from sin and death. Therefore verse thirteen reveals that the children of God are not born of blood, that is no one is born naturally into salvation, (for everyone is only born naturally into sin, thus being born a Jew does not give you eternal salvation, same with being born or reared in a Christian home, or having lived a righteous life, or done good works and deeds in your life does not make you a child of God; though doing good may reveal that you are a child of God; in of itself, it has nothing to do with your salvation). For to become a child of God one must first come to the Lord Jesus Christ as a repentant sinner in need of salvation, believing and trusting in Him alone Crucified and Risen from the dead for one’s sins atonement and eternal salvation. Only then is one born again by His Holy Spirit, when one believes in and receives the Lord Jesus Christ as testified too in all the Scriptures for themselves! Thus no one becomes a Christian unless they repent and believe in the Gospel! Similarly, no one becomes a child of God “by the will of the flesh”. That is, that they now decide they want to be one, and thus join a church or Christian fellowship; or go to a Bible school, or even enter into a seminary or missionary service somewhere. Though this maybe their moving towards repenting and believing in the Lord Jesus Christ; in of itself their will, the will of the flesh, makes no one a child of God. For it is faith in the Lord Jesus Christ alone that makes one a child of God. And so just as one cannot make oneself a child of God, neither than can we make anyone else a child of God, (i.e. “the will of man”). For neither you, nor I, can produce the Holy Spirit rebirth in ourselves, or anyone else, which alone makes us children of God. For in this, the Will of God is paramount, for whom He wills to have mercy on He has mercy on, and whom He wills to harden He hardens. Therefore, we must all come to the Lord Jesus Christ believing in Him and receiving Him for ourselves to become children of God, who alone then saves us and transforms us by His Holy Spirits rebirth of our person. For the work of eternal salvation in anyone is of God alone, so that the glory might be to Him alone, through His Son the Lord Jesus Christ.
