John 1:6–8 John the Baptist

6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe. 8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

Commentary
Having declared that the Word was with God, and is God, the Gospel of John now briefly shifts focus to the Word’s messenger. In Luke’s Gospel we here how God chose a righteous couple to give birth to John the Baptist; the witness spoken of here; whose sole purpose was to bear witness to the Light (Jesus Christ) and prepare Israel for His manifestation to them. Thus, John was a man sent from God to bear witness to the Light, that all through him might believe, not in John, but in Jesus Christ! For John himself was not the Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
