17 Then
the seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us
in Your name.” 18 And
He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from
heaven. 19 Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and
scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means
hurt you.
20 Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to
you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.” 21 In that hour Jesus rejoiced in the Spirit
and said, “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and
earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and
revealed them to babes. Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight. 22 All things have been delivered
to Me by My Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who
the Father is except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to
reveal Him.” 23 Then
He turned to His disciples and said privately, “Blessed
are the eyes which see the things you see; 24 for I tell you that many
prophets and kings have desired to see what you see, and have not seen it,
and to hear what you hear, and have not heard it.”
Commentary
Vs. 17-18 17 Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.” 18 And He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.
When the seventy disciples had completed their mission, they returned to Lord Jesus Christ in great jubilation and joy, because as they did their work for Him, they found out that even the demons were subject to them in Christ’s Name. Which raises a question: Do we as believers in the Lord Jesus Christ have the same authority and power today in His Name? Opinions vary but what we can do is very often conditional upon what we believe and do, that is what the disciples found out earlier when they could not cast out a demon from a man’s son (see Luke 9:37-42; Mark 9:14-29, vs. 28-29). And so, the casting out of demons is not something anyone should take lightly, or do flippantly, because one must be well grounded and guarded in the faith, examining their own heart and life, making sure that they themselves are not disqualified by personal sin or unbelief. And so putting on the whole armor of God, with one’s dependence fully upon Him, is how one begins such an exercise (Eph. 6:10-18). Now when the seventy disciples returned to Jesus with joy and declared to Him that, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.” He then said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.” Indicating to them that what they experienced was because He has all Authority and Power over him. And so, what they were able to do was only by His granting them the ability to do so. For anyone who thinks they can do so outside of the Lord Jesus Christ, and thus merely invoke His Name will not be able to do so (See Acts 19:11-20).
Vs. 19-20 19 Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. 20 Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”
Here the Lord Jesus tells the seventy, that He has given them the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you (vs. 19). And so, by being enabled in such a way they themselves were chosen to experience and manifest the finial downfall of Satan (Rev. 12:7-12). Jesus then in reaffirming to them what they experienced, (and will experience), also says to them, “Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.” Therefore, our rejoicing is not to be in the gifts and talents God has given us, or because of the authority Jesus has granted us over all the power of the enemy, but rather our rejoicing is to be in Him, because our names our written in heaven!
Vs. 21 21 In that hour Jesus rejoiced in the Spirit and said, “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and revealed them to babes. Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight.
Having declared these things to His disciples Jesus now rejoices in the Spirit, saying: “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and revealed them to babes. Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight.” The eternal truths of Jesus Christ’s Word God Himself then has hidden from the “wise and prudent” of this world who through their own “wisdom” and “prudence” do not believe in God and His Son who is exceedingly far above them in All Wisdom, Knowledge, Power and Might (consider 1 Cor. 1:17-31). For it is the pride of mankind that always keeps them from the truth and love of God.
Vs. 22 “All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.”
Jesus now reveals that “All things have been delivered to Me by My Father,” That is everything that the Father has dominion and rule over has been delivered into the Lord Jesus Christs’ s hand (see Phil. 2:9-11; also Psalm 110:1; Isaiah 9:6-7; 52:13; Luke 1:32-33; Acts 2:33; 1 Cor. 15:24-28; Eph. 1:16-23 etc.). Now Jesus statement: “…and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.” Indicates that God the Father and Jesus Christ the Son’s Person and Relationship is uniquely theirs. Thus, understanding it as they do is beyond our human comprehension. That said, Jesus Christ the Son specifically came to reveal God the Father to humanity as only He knows Him. Therefore, it is His prerogative to reveal the Father to whomever He will, so that we too may love and believe in Him.
Vs. 23-24 23 Then He turned to His disciples and said privately, “Blessed are the eyes which see the things you see; 24 for I tell you that many prophets and kings have desired to see what you see, and have not seen it, and to hear what you hear, and have not heard it.”
The Lord Jesus now tells the disciples just how privileged and blessed they are we are to be able to see the things He does and to hear the Words He speaks. For as He says many prophets and kings desired to hear what they (and we) hear and to see what they (and we) see.
