Luke 12:54-59

54 Then He also said to the multitudes, “Whenever you see a cloud rising out of the west, immediately you say, ‘A shower is coming’; and so it is. 55 And when you see the south wind blow, you say, ‘There will be hot weather’; and there is. 56 Hypocrites! You can discern the face of the sky and of the earth, but how is it you do not discern this time? 57 Yes, and why, even of yourselves, do you not judge what is right? 58 When you go with your adversary to the magistrate, make every effort along the way to settle with him, lest he drag you to the judge, the judge deliver you to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison. 59 I tell you, you shall not depart from there till you have paid the very last mite.”

Commentary
Vs. 54-56 54 Then He also said to the multitudes, “Whenever you see a cloud rising out of the west, immediately you say, ‘A shower is coming’; and so it is. 55 And when you see the south wind blow, you say, ‘There will be hot weather’; and there is. 56 Hypocrites! You can discern the face of the sky and of the earth, but how is it you do not discern this time?

Having spoken to His disciples the Lord Jesus Christ now turns to the multitudes and begins to rebuke them. For though they could easily discern the weather patterns that were coming, yet they could not discern that the time of their redemption was at hand! Men and woman then in every generation likewise can be moved by the things their eyes see and perceive, and yet are not moved to repent and believe in the One whose Coming has begun the countdown to the end! Reconciliation then with God is not something anyone should ever delay pursuing and having for themselves.

Vs. 57-59 57 “Yes, and why, even of yourselves, do you not judge what is right? 58 When you go with your adversary to the magistrate, make every effort along the way to settle with him, lest he drag you to the judge, the judge deliver you to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison. 59 I tell you, you shall not depart from there till you have paid the very last mite.”

Therefore, Jesus asks them to judge for themselves what is right, for His coming to them was for their sakes, not His; so that they might be reconciled and restored to God; because apart from faith in the Lord Jesus Christ no one would escape the wrath and judgment of God!
