49 “I came to send fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already
kindled! 50 But I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how distressed I am
till it is accomplished! 51 Do you suppose that I came to give peace on earth? I tell
you, not at all, but rather division. 52 For from now on five in one
house will be divided: three against two, and two against three. 53 Father will be divided against
son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against
mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against
her mother-in-law.”
Commentary
Vs. 49 “I came to send fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!”
Here the Lord Jesus is obviously not talking about a literal fire; rather He is referring to how those who will view Him as a “threat” to the status quo and or to their Godless beliefs and desires will be “set of fire” by Him and His Words in an evil and zealous way for not only His persecution and denunciation, but also for all of us who believe and follow Him (consider Matt. 10:25-26). Now the fire had not yet be kindled (though there was then opposition to Him) because the Lord Jesus Christ had not yet been Crucified, then Risen from the dead three days later, and then 40 days later Ascended back to heaven. And thus, the Holy Spirit had not yet been poured out into the world by which now convicts the world of sin, and righteousness and judgment (John 16:8-9). Therefore, though Jesus came as the Savior of the world offering peace with God to one and to all through His shed blood on the Cross, not all will repent and believe in Him, and so Jesus Christ will bring divisions to even the most intimate and personal family ties and relationships, which will be made abundantly clear in the next verses.
Vs. 50 “But I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how distressed I am till it is accomplished!”
Now the “baptism” the Lord Jesus Christ is referring to here is not a water or Spirit baptism, rather it is His being baptized unto death on the Cross for the Atonement of our sins, and thus our Redemption from sin and death for us all who believe in Him. Therefore, Jesus was distressed during His earthly Ministry because until that was accomplished, no one could be saved! Nothing else then was of a higher or greater priority for His Person and Life than accomplishing that!
Vs. 51 “Do you suppose that I came to give peace on earth? I tell you, not at all, but rather division.”
Here the Lord Jesus Christ warns us as His disciple that both His Person and His Word will not be a unifying force on earth. Indeed, because the world is so avowed on following its own Godless ways and desires when Jesus Christ is introduced into a home or family there will be divisions, not by Christ’s choice but by theirs.
Vs. 52 “For from now on five in one house will be divided: three against two, and two against three.”
Therefore, when someone becomes a Christian and they bring the Lord Jesus Christ into their home, their will be division, as Jesus says, three against two, and two against three.
Vs. 53 “Father will be divided against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.”
And so here the Lord Jesus says that even a father will be set against his son, or a son will be set against his father. Same with mothers and daughters, or people and their in-law’s. For the Lord Jesus Christ’s Person will expose everyone who loves and believes in Him, and everyone who does not.
