5 And
He said to them, “Which of you shall have a friend, and
go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves; 6 for a friend of mine has come to
me on his journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; 7 and he will answer from within
and say, ‘Do not trouble me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me
in bed; I cannot rise and give to you’? 8 I say to you, though he will not
rise and give to him because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence
he will rise and give him as many as he needs. 9 “So I say to you, ask, and it
will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to
you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him
who knocks it will be opened.
The Lord Jesus Christ having a laid a foundation for our prayers, He now tells us a parable to show us all the importance of persistence in prayer, but more importantly God’s willingness to answer our prayers when we seek Him. Now in the parable the picture is of man who has a friend come to him at midnight, (i.e. like a traveler who has arrived late at night). However, he has nothing to set before him. And so, he immediately goes to a friend’s house and requests of him three loves to set before his guest. However as one would expect the man is quite annoyed by this late-night call and request and initially tells him to go away, yet because of his persistence the Lord Jesus Christ says the man will give to him all that he requests (vs. 5-8). And so having established the fact that if mortal men will yield to the requests of their persistent friends, how much more willing is God our loving heavenly Father willing to hear and answer all of our prayer requests regardless of the circumstances in which they are spoken, whether in the day, or in the night! Therefore, the Lord Jesus Christ having revealed that now says to us all: “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. Vs. 9-10 That then is the promise of God that He will hear and answer all of our prayers and petitions, for when we seek Him, we will find Him, the only “condition” is that we seek Him in faith (consider Heb. 11:6). These then are the good things that God gives us when we seek Him in faith. That said God does not pander to our covetousness, or to any evil desire that we or anyone else thinks to satisfy by seeking and praying to Him. For the Promise here is of God’s help and provisions and salvation, and all things that pertain to it, and not to the greed and lusts of men (James 4:3-4; 1 John 2:15-17; 3:22; 5:14).
