Matthew 12:31-37

31 “Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men. 32 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come. 33 “Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or else make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for a tree is known by its fruit. 34 Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. 36 But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. 37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

Commentary
Vs. 31-32 “Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men. 32 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come.”

The Lord Jesus Christ now warns us all of the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit which cannot be forgiven either in this age or in the age to come. However, the Lord Jesus first tempers that by saying, “every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men…”, for that is what Jesus came to do, not condemn the world; while people are living in darkness and blindness and ignorance of God’s love for them; but to save the world (John 3:16-17). Therefore, whatever sins and blasphemies one has spoken or done will be forgiven them (the moment they repent and believe) because of the Lord Jesus Christ’s death on the Cross for us all. However, as the Lord Jesus warns, the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men.” Because to acquaint the Lord Jesus Christ’s Person and Work by the Spirit of God with Satan is absolutely unpardonable because it is by the Spirit of God that the Lord Jesus Christ reveals Himself to mankind, therefore there is no redemption or salvation for anyone who does so. Anyone then who blasphemies against the Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or the age to come. Now the blasphemy against the Spirit is not the same as one who lives in sin and rebellion against God but then like the prodigal son comes to his senses and returns to Him. Same with those who live in ignorance of God’s salvation for them, or who have a certain level of knowledge of God but spurn God and His salvation through Christ for them for a season of their lives, or even most of their lives, and then in moment of repentance and faith they reach out to the Lord and He then reaches down and saves them. No, the Blasphemy of the Spirit is a very specific sin that entails one having fully rejected the Lord Jesus Christ, therefore any witness that God bears to them of the Lord Jesus Christ through His Spirit is not only lost and rejected by them, but they openly and brazenly blasphemy His Spirit by attributing His works to Satan, something that cannot be forgiven either in this age or in the age to come.

Vs. 33 “Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or else make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for a tree is known by its fruit.”

By saying as much the Lord Jesus Christ is calling the Pharisees to account; to quit wickedly judging Him as evil when all He was doing was good; telling them to either bear good fruit as He was always does (and yet He was constantly being opposed and spoken against by them) or bear bad fruit as they were always doing in their ongoing opposition to Him, even going so far as to blasphemy the Holy Spirit in their attempts and desires to undermine Him and His witness to the world, because as the Lord says a tree (i.e. a person) is known by the fruit they bear (also see Matt. 7:15-20).

Vs. 34-35 Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things.”

And so now The Lord Jesus Christ having rebuked them now calls them what they truly are, Brood of vipers!”, that is offspring of Satan their father (John 8:44). For only Satan’s own could so wickedly slander the Savior of the world and yet feel not only justified in doing so, but also pleasure. Therefore, the Lord Jesus says of them, “…How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” Even if they wanted too, they could not speak well of the Lord Jesus Christ and all the good that He had done in their presence, and was continuing to do, because their hearts were already hardened against and darkened towards Him. Therefore, their mouths could do nothing other than speak evil about Him, and thus by their doing so they were only revealing their own evil and darkened hearts which spurned on by their wicked and scheming plots against Him. Therefore, the Lord Jesus Christ also says: “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things.”

The true nature of a man than is not revealed by the stature he has, or the position he holds, or whom His parents were, or His pedigree, or schooling. The true nature of a man is known by the fruits he bears and the words he speaks, separate one from the other and you will not get a true picture of him. Consider then the Pharisees, they were the religious leaders amongst the Jews, sitting in the seat of Moses (Matt. 23:2-11). And yet for all that they were the worst of all men, because they themselves did not believe either John the Baptists’ witness to them as Christ’s forerunner (Luke 7:28-30), nor did they repent and believe when the Lord Jesus Christ having begun His Ministry did countless miracles and healings and such amongst them so as to be undeniably sent by God to them. No, their only response to the Lord was to turn and plot against Him when in refusing to live by their self-imposed religious statutes He was also rebuking all of their hypocrisy and evil and pride (Matt 15:1-20). Therefore, just as the Lord Jesus says, “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things.”

Vs. 36-37 36 But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. 37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” Therefore, the Lord Jesus Christ warns them and us all that “…for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. 37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

Therefore, though people may take pleasure in the evil they now speak against the Lord, or against others, no one will escape the judgment of God when the Lord Jesus Christ sitting on His Throne and exercising God’s Judgment requires an accounting of all our speech. For the Lord Jesus Christ warns us all, For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” Therefore, we who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ will be justified because having seen ourselves for what we have been apart from Christ, we confess ourselves as sinners and repent and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and so we will be justified by our speech which now trusts in and justifies Him alone. And so just as those who repent and believe will be justified by their words, so too those who do not believe will be condemned by their words, for it will be one’s own words that will reveal whether they believe in the Lord Jesus Christ or not.
