Matthew 13:54-58

54 When He had come to His own country, He taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished and said, “Where did this Man get this wisdom and these mighty works? 55 Is this not the carpenter’s son? Is not His mother called Mary? And His brothers James, Joses, Simon, and Judas? 56 And His sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this Man get all these things?” 57 So they were offended at Him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house.” 58 Now He did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief.

Commentary
The Lord Jesus now returns to Nazareth, to the place where He grew up, and there He teaches in their Synagogue on the Sabbath (Mark 6:1-6). Now all the people who heard Him there were totally astonished at His teaching, saying, “Where did this Man get this wisdom and these mighty works?” 55 Is this not the carpenter’s son? Is not His mother called Mary?” vs. 54-55
And so, they could hardly believe that Jesus who came from such humble beginnings, and growing up amongst them as a carpenter’s son, whose mother and brothers were still living amongst them, could attain to such wisdom and understanding and do such mighty works (i.e. miracles) that had been reported to them, and so they were offended at Him (literally to be offended, “to be bitter against”, to be shocked by or angered at, LN. 25.179, 25.180 also see Luke 7:23 “caused to stumble” NKJV margin).
Nonetheless when the Lord Jesus had seen their reaction to His Person and His Preaching He said, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house.” A truth that rings true in every generation where God raises up an individual to be His spokesmen. For there will be those of that mans own household, and even his own countrymen, who will find it hard to believe that “such an individual” could be used by God for His purposes. Now in regards to this consider 1 Cor. 1:26-31). Therefore, the Scripture says that the Lord Jesus Christ did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief, for it is owns own unbelief that will keep them from seeing the Lord Jesus Christ for who He truly is and all He really does for us all.
