51 Jesus said to them, “Have you
understood all these things?” They said to Him, “Yes, Lord.” 52 Then He said to them, “Therefore every
scribe instructed concerning the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who
brings out of his treasure things new and old.” 53 Now it came to pass, when Jesus had finished these
parables, that He departed from there.
Commentary
Having given the disciples the Kingdom
parables, the Lord Jesus Christ now asks them if they have understood all these
things. To which they respond, Yes, Lord (vs. 51). Therefore, the Lord Jesus
Christ now says, “Therefore every
scribe instructed concerning the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who
brings out of his treasure things new and old.” That is everyone properly instructed concerning the kingdom of heaven
will bring out of their treasures both new things, that is treasures from the
New Testament never before revealed in Old, as well as treasures from the Old,
since both are linked, and in the New the fulfillment of the Old is found. Therefore,
the New Covenant which exceedingly surpasses the Old is emphasized first and
foremost, for it is by the New Covenant which the Lord Jesus Christ enacted by His
broken body and shed blood on the Cross that we are kept in a relationship with
God. And so it was when the Lord Jesus Christ had finished these parables that
He departed from there, moving on to the next local to declare the Kingdom of
heaven and its truths there. Such then should be us as well declaring the
everlasting riches of Christ wherever God leads us and opens a door for us to
do so.
