15 So it was, when the angels had gone away
from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, “Let us now go
to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made
known to us.” 16 And
they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger.
17 Now
when they had seen Him, they made widely known the saying which was told
them concerning this Child. 18 And all those who
heard it marveled at those things which were told them by the shepherds.
19 But Mary kept all
these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 Then the shepherds returned, glorifying
and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was
told them.
Vs. 15 So it was, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, “Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.”
Having then come urgently into Bethlehem in great joy and delight the shepherds find Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in manger, just as it was told them by the angel (vs. 16). And having laid their eyes upon the Child what wonder and awe must have filled them, for who could’ve imagined that the Lord’s Christ would be born in manger, and first revealed to them, some lowly shepherds of Bethlehem! They then will become Christ’s first witnesses, telling people everywhere what had happened to them, and how the Lord had brought them into Bethlehem to see His salvation (vs. 17). And wherever they spoke of these things all the people marveled (vs. 18). Now the Scripture also says that Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart (vs. 19). That is, she did not forget them, but pondered what all this could possibly mean of the Child born through her. Mary then like those who saw and heard these things could not possibly fathom the everlasting impact that this Child would have on lost and perishing humanity. The shepherds then upon seeing the Child, return to their flocks praising and glorifying God for all things told them and shown them (vs. 20).

The shepherds then
upon seeing this magnificent sight and hearing this angelic host praising God do
not delay in going to Bethlehem, for truly the Lord had made known to them that
this day in the city of David Christ the Lord was born.
