Luke 4:38-39

38 Now He arose from the synagogue and entered Simon’s house. But Simon’s wife’s mother was sick with a high fever, and they made request of Him concerning her. 39 So He stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. And immediately she arose and served them.

Commentary
Having healed a man of an unclean spirit in the synagogue of Capernaum on the Sabbath, restoring then rest to that man’s mind, body, and soul, as the Sabbath is God’s commanded Day of Rest. Jesus then leaving there now enters Simon’s house where Simons mother-in-law is lying sick with a fever, and so with Jesus arrival they made a request of Him that He would heal her (vs. 38). Jesus then goes and stands over where the woman is lying and He rebukes the fever, and when He did it left her! Immediately then she arose and served them. Now in the first instance Jesus demonstrated that He has Power and Authority over the demonic (or spiritual) realm, while in this instance Jesus demonstrates that He has Power and Authority in the Physical realm. Thus, demonstrating to us all that He alone has the Power and Authority to not only heal us spiritually, but also physically. Something which He does through the Gospel, first healing and restoring our souls back to God when we believe in Him, then at the Resurrection of the dead healing and restoring our bodies of whatever aliments and afflictions and or amputations or crippling problems that we had in this life (consider Isaiah 35:4-10; Rev. 21:22-22:5 etc.). Jesus then is not just the Savior of men’s, women’s and children’s souls. but He is the Great Physician who has the Authority and Power of God (because He is the Son of God) to heal us all who believe in Him. Now when Simons mother-in-law was healed by Jesus she arose and served them all. Indicating that she was not just made to feel “better”, but she was immediately made completely well! And so, she arose and served Jesus, and all those there. For that is what Jesus Christ does when He heals us, He gives us a new heart and new desires, and we want to serve Him and those around us, serving then in the power and joy and love that His Holy Spirit is now freely giving us. For no one truly healed by Christ can remain fruitless and idle, because the love and grace and transforming power of God moves us and enables us, providing opportunities for us to serve those around us (consider Eph 2:10). Therefore, serving the Lord Jesus Christ is not something that is to be confined to the church walls, but the “mission field” is the entire world. where we too can demonstrate and manifest the works and love of God and Christ in our lives to everyone everywhere!
