Luke 4:31-37

31 Then He went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbaths. 32 And they were astonished at His teaching, for His word was with authority. 33 Now in the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon. And he cried out with a loud voice, 34 saying, “Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!” 35 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him in their midst, it came out of him and did not hurt him. 36 Then they were all amazed and spoke among themselves, saying, “What a word this is! For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.” 37 And the report about Him went out into every place in the surrounding region.

Vs. 31-32 31 Then He went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbaths. 32 And they were astonished at His teaching, for His word was with authority. 33

Having left Nazareth, Jesus now moves into Capernaum, a city of Galilee located on the northern shores of the Sea of Galilee. It is here that Jesus finds a much warmer reception. For it is here that Jesus is teaching them on the Sabbaths. Now the people there were amazed at Jesus’ teaching for His word was with authority, which is to be distinguished from one’s tone of voice, for it was not Jesus’ tone of voice that was with authority, but His Word. For the very words that Jesus spoke to them He was speaking on God’s Authority, as God’s Son and Prophet in fulfillment of Deuteronomy 18:15. Therefore, wherever and whenever Jesus speaks to us all through His Word, He speaks to us all as One speaking with Authority, God’s Authority.

Vs. 33-35 33 Now in the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon.

Jesus having left Nazareth is now teaching in the synagogues of Capernaum on the Sabbath. Now there was a man there who had an unclean demon, that is an evil spirit had entered him, and when the man saw Jesus, he cried out saying, “Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!” The demon then unlike the people of Nazareth immediately recognized Jesus for who He is, calling Him, the Holy One of God. And knowing that Jesus the Holy One of God has both the Power and Authority to destroy it, (and will destroy it and all of Satan’s demonic legions with it in the fulfillment of time) the demon cries out through the man. Jesus though does not permit the demon to speak any longer, for He was no need of testimony from a demon He and commands it to be quiet and come out of the man. And with that, the demon spirit throws the man in their midst and immediately leaves him.

Vs. 36-37 36 Then they were all amazed and spoke among themselves, saying, “What a word this is! For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.” 37 And the report about Him went out into every place in the surrounding region.

When the people saw what had just occurred, they were all amazed and began to speak amongst themselves, saying: “What a word this is! For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.” (vs. 36). And with the Lord Jesus Christ casting out an unclean spirit by His Word, a report about Him went out into every place in the surrounding region of Capernaum. Both Jesus’ Person and Name (and thus His Mighty deeds) were being talked about everywhere, and yet as we will see, for all that and so much more, and yet the people of Capernaum will not come to a saving faith in Him. For its one thing to be amazed by the Works of Christ, through His Person and Life. and or those who belong to Him, and yet it’s completely another to personally believe in Him. And that is what God’s Son is seeking from each and every one of us, not merely to be amazed by His Person and Works, but rather that we place our own faith and trust in His Person. For that is why Christ did the things that He did so that we might believe in Him (John 3:16).
