Luke 3:21-22

21 When all the people were baptized, it came to pass that Jesus also was baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened. 22 And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.”

Luke’s Gospel now affirms that the Lord Jesus Christ is the Son of God. For after all the people were baptized, Jesus also was baptized by John so as to fulfill all righteous (see Matt. 3:13-17). Now when Jesus was baptized the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in the bodily form of a dove. Giving all there the visual que of God’s grace and peace being bestowed upon His Son in the gentle form of a dove. Which prefigures our own Holy Spirit baptism that takes place upon all who now believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. For this is not something that is outwardly dramatic and traumatic, but is inwardly experienced in the sense of having God’s grace and peace restored to oneself. Now when Jesus Christ went into the baptismal waters He was praying and so when He arose, and God’s Spirit descended in bodily form upon Him like a dove, God the Father Himself spoke from heaven and said: “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.” Thus, declaring to one and to all that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Heavens witness then is of Christ and Him alone as the way to eternal redemption and salvation. For it is only by Jesus Christ’s Perfect obedience to the Will of God the Father that we can have His Righteousness imputed to us as well, when we believe in Him (consider Rom. 5:1; 2 Cor. 5:21). Therefore, God is only pleased with us not when we try harder, (for by works or good deeds no one is saved, Rom. 4:4-5, Gal. 2:16, 21; Eph. 2:8-9) but when we trust and believe in His Son as having fulfilled all righteousness for us. For that is the Gospel, Jesus Christ who knew no sin, becoming sin for us, by bearing all our guilt and all our sins (and thus all our punishment) on the Cross, so that we can have the remission of all our sins (no matter how heinous) and everlasting life, freely given by God to everyone who believes in Him (John 3:16; Acts 10:43; 13:38-39; Rom. 3:21-26; etc.). That then is God’s Good News for you, remission of all your sins and everlasting life the moment you believe in Him (Eph. 1:13-14). I urge you then, and everyone who reads this, believe in and receive the Lord Jesus Christ for yourselves and become children of God having new and everlasting life (John 1:12; 3:16)!
