51 Then He went down with them and came to
Nazareth, and was subject to them, but His mother kept all these things in her
heart. 52 And
Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.
Commentary
Jesus then having
astonished the teachers of the law in the Temple, with both His questions and
answers, and having told His parents that He must be about doing His Father’s business,
(Luke 2:47-50). Now returns with His parents to Nazareth, where the Scripture
says that He was subject to them. And so even though He knew that He was the
Son of God/Son of Man He did not reject or rebel against His parent’s authority
(or any authority), but was subject to them, just as God His Father wanted Him
to be. Now Mary the Scripture says, kept all these things in her heart (vs.
51). That is the things Jesus was both saying and doing, were revealing to her
that this Child, which she was rearing for God, was no ordinary Child! Having
then submitted Himself to his parents, just as God His Father wanted Him to do,
Jesus then increased in both wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men
(vs. 52). The connection then with growing in stature (i.e. having a good
standing) in the eyes of God and men is always linked with our obeying God
(Prov. 3:1-4, Rom. 14:16-18). Same with wisdom, for nobody grows in wisdom who
lives or is living contrary to it (consider Prov. 8:12-36).
