Commentary
In Matthews Gospel
it opens with the genealogy of Jesus Christ through Joseph, as genealogies were
foundational to Jewish life (i.e. their inheritances) and of course the Laws
priesthood. Matthew then sets out the genealogical history of Jesus Christ right
back through King David and Abraham, the father of the nation of Israel (Matt. 1:1). Thus, showing that Jesus Christ is not only a Jew,
descended from the tribe of Judah (Matt. 1:2), but He is also of the Kingly
lineage of David, the man God chose to establish His throne on earth. Proving
that Jesus Christ is the heir of the Nation of Israel and its Priesthood and
Throne. Now in Luke’s Gospel Jesus Christ’s ancestry is traced right back to
Adam through Mary showing that Jesus Christ is also the Son of Man, that is He
is descended from Adam the first man, and thus He is also qualified to step
into Adam’s place as the Head of humanity and take Adam’s and Eve’s original
sin in the garden upon Himself as humanities Sin bearing servant (Isaiah 53). For
that is the point of giving genealogical records in the Bible, to show and
preserve lineages histories for future generations, and here for us all so that
we can be absolutely confident in Jesus Christ’s Place, Right and Authority as
God’s only begotten Son. Now there are many names here, some of which are
obscure to us, and some of which are very important Biblical figures. None of
which are unimportant because all point us to One Man, the Son of Man and the Man
of God Himself, the Lord Jesus Christ.
