Luke 2:39-40

³⁹ So when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own city, Nazareth. ⁴⁰ And the Child grew and became strong in spirit, filled with wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him.

Commentary

Joseph and Mary then having done all things that were prescribed in the Law of the Lord for them to do now return to their own city, the city of Nazareth. Now the Scripture says that the Child grew and became strong in spirit, filled with wisdom, (thus Jesus was not just growing physically, but more importantly He was becoming strong in spirit in all His wisdom and understandings, Jesus’ mental facilities then regarding the Word of God will soon be shown to rival and surpass even that of the learned scribes (i.e. scholars). Now the Scripture also says that the grace of God was upon Him (vs. 40). That is God’s hand was with Him, and was being very gracious towards Him, both guiding Him and preserving Him and blessing Him in all the activities of His early life (consider Isaiah 42:6-7; 49:8-9; Psalm 34:15-16; 1 Peter 3:12 etc.).
