Matthew 19:27-30

27 Then Peter answered and said to Him, “See, we have left all and followed You. Therefore what shall we have?” 28 So Jesus said to them, “Assuredly I say to you, that in the regeneration, when the Son of Man sits on the throne of His glory, you who have followed Me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My name’s sake, shall receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life. 30 But many who are first will be last, and the last first.

Commentary
Vs. 27 Then Peter answered and said to Him, “See, we have left all and followed You. Therefore what shall we have?”

The Apostle Peter upon seeing the young rich ruler leave the Lord Jesus Christ for his riches and hearing what Jesus just said, now boldly declares to Him, “See, we have left all and followed You. Therefore, what shall we have?” Now Peters declaring that they have left all and followed Jesus Christ is the essence of true Christian discipleship, and only comes when one sees their own need for Him and comes to Christ who brings meaning and purpose and life to everyone who repents and believes in Him. And so, in forsaking all to follow the Lord Jesus Christ, Peter now asks the Lord what he and the other disciples will have.

Vs. 28 So Jesus said to them, “Assuredly I say to you, that in the regeneration, when the Son of Man sits on the throne of His glory, you who have followed Me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

Now the Lord Jesus in responding to Peters question now tells him that in the regeneration, (gr. Παλιγγενεσία, Str. 3824), when the Lord Jesus Christ Reigns in the Millenia (i.e. the Son of Man sits on the throne of His glory); and there is a new heavens and earth; the twelve disciples who have followed Him will also sit on twelve thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And so, though they will be rejected along with our Lord Savior by their own nation and people, they will when Christ sits on His Throne and Reigns over not only Israel but all nations, they too will be rewarded handsomely, and will also sit on twelve thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel who at that time rejected Him.

Vs. 29-30 29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My name’s sake, shall receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life. 30 But many who are first will be last, and the last first. The Lord Jesus now continues by saying that not only the twelve will be handsomely rewarded, but everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My name’s sake, shall receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life.” Therefore, the reward for being a disciple of Christ does not come by being financially rewarded or “blessed” in this life, as the false preachers and teachers love to imply and declare; thereby exploiting people through their own covetousness for their own gain (2 Peter 2:3). No in this life true Christian discipleship often involves sacrifice and “loss”. In essence forsaking the temporal and quite possibly the “comfortable” for the eternal. Forsaking what is seen, for what is unseen, and yet more real and satisfying. Therefore, the Lord Jesus says everyone who has left lands or homes or left family members to serve Him, or even had to severe family ties for His sake shall receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life. Not that eternal life is a reward or recompense for ones sacrifice and service (Eph. 2:8-9) but in the Lord’s Reign being with Christ is the crowing jewel of unending joy and glory which exceedingly surpasses every other relationship and reward and riches that one could possibly hope to attain to in this life (Mark 8:36-9:1) For to follow Christ to the end is to have eternal life with Him. Therefore, those who sacrifice their lives, dreams, and or desires now for the Lord Jesus Christ and the gospels sake though they are “last” now in the eyes of those of this world, they shall be first when He reigns. For it will be then the Lord Jesus Christ shall handsomely reward everything done for Him.
