Matthew 20:17-19

17 Now Jesus, going up to Jerusalem, took the twelve disciples aside on the road and said to them, 18 “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and to the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death, 19 and deliver Him to the Gentiles to mock and to scourge and to crucify. And the third day He will rise again.”

Commentary
The Lord Jesus now with the twelve begins His journey to Jerusalem, this time though He is not going to visit the sons of Levi and purge the Temple as He did at the beginning of His ministry (see Malachi 3:1; John 2:13-25). Instead this is His journey to the cross, to suffer and die for the sins of many. And so, Jesus begins preparing the disciples for that Day by saying to them, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and to the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death, 19 and deliver Him to the Gentiles to mock and to scourge and to crucify. And the third day He will rise again.” Vs. 18-19
First then is that Jesus Christ will be betrayed by one of His own, Judas Iscariot who will in fulfillment of the Scriptures will betray Jesus to the chief priests and scribes for thirty pieces of silver. And so, they will be the ones who will condemn Jesus to death. However, as the Lord Jesus also foretells because they will lack the authority (under Roman rule) to put Him to death, they will turn the Son of Man over to the Gentiles who will mock, and scourge and crucify Him; thus, making both Jews and Gentiles; couplable in His death. Nonetheless as the Lord Jesus states here He will on the third day rise from the dead. Thereby foretelling His own Crucifixion death and then Resurrection from the dead. Now how much of this the disciples understood at that time is uncertain, because as we will see instead of preparing themselves for that Day some were still fixated on their own ambitious desires. Something that is not unique to them as we now await Christ’s return.
