Matthew 26:1-5

1 Now it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, that He said to His disciples, 2 “You know that after two days is the Passover, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified.” 3 Then the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders of the people assembled at the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, 4 and plotted to take Jesus by trickery and kill Him. 5 But they said, “Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar among the people.”

Commentary
Vs.1-2 1 Now it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, that He said to His disciples, 2 “You know that after two days is the Passover, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified.”

Having finished all His sayings, the Lord Jesus now tells the disciples that in just two days the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified (vs. 1-2). Now this will take place in accord with the Passover, so that those who do so, will unknowingly to themselves in orchestrating our Lords Crucifixion death (Acts 4:27-28), become the agents by which the Lord Jesus Christ fulfills its true meaning, and by which God may now “Passover” His judgment from us all who believe in Him.

Vs. 3-5 3 Then the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders of the people assembled at the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, 4 and plotted to take Jesus by trickery and kill Him. 5 But they said, “Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar among the people.” Now just as the Lord Jesus Christ is preparing the disciples for His imminent betrayal and Crucifixion death, so the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders of the people, (i.e. Israel’s leaders) have assembled themselves at the palace of Caiaphas the high priest where they are plotting how they will take Jesus by trickery and kill him. Nonetheless salvation is even available to them if they would likewise repent and believe in the Gospel. Now in their plotting to take Jesus, they also reason not to do so during the Passover feast, lest they should cause an uproar amongst the people, by which their plans to take Him and kill Him would be hindered by the people who would want to save Jesus from their desires. Therefore, though they have plans to kill the Lord Jesus Christ, their plots and schemes will not unfold until the Word of God is fulfilled, first with the Lord Jesus Christ partaking in the Passover feast with His disciples; where He will also usher in the New Covenant which will be enacted for us all when His Crucifixion Death is accomplished according to the Word of God for us all; then when the Lord by His Will allows Himself to be betrayed by Judas Iscariot and the taken by lawless hands in the garden of Gethsemane.
