17 Now on the first day of the Feast of Unleavened
Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying to Him, “Where do You want us to
prepare for You to eat the Passover?” 18 And He said, “Go into the city
to a certain man, and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, “My time is at hand; I
will keep the Passover at your house with My disciples.” ’ ” 19 So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them; and
they prepared the Passover.
Commentary
With Judas having agreed to the Lord’s betrayal (and thus the conspiracy now set in motion) the other disciples unaware of what is going on behind the scenes, now in anticipation of the Passover Feast ask the Lord Jesus where He wants them to prepare the Passover Feast so that He may eat it (vs. 17). Now the Lord Jesus’ reply in Matthew does not state the exact city, or to whom Jesus sent them too, only that the Lord tells them to: “Go into the city to a certain man, and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, “My time is at hand; I will keep the Passover at your house with My disciples.” ’ ” In Mark and Luke’s Gospel however, greater details are given on how this unfolded (Mark 14:12-16; Luke 22:7-13). The protection then of the city and the man’s person who hosted the Lord and His disciples may have been the reason for this omission, or it simply may have been that the Lord did not want us to be distracted by those things which are utterly irrelevant, and thus lose sight of the True Importance and Significance of what He is about to accomplish. The disciples then having received a command from the Lord, go and do just as He directed them to do, everything then unfolds just as the Lord tells them that it would.
