1 Then Jesus went out and departed from the temple, and
His disciples came up to show Him the buildings of the temple. 2 And Jesus said to them, “Do
you not see all these things? Assuredly, I say to you, not one stone
shall be left here upon another, that shall not be thrown down.”
Commentary
Vs. 1-2 Now as the Lord departs from the Temple the disciples being enamoured with the Temple and its buildings now come to Him to show Him the buildings of the Temple. However, the Lord Jesus Christ is not moved by external beauty of people, institutions, or things, especially when such has become so corrupted within so as to reject His Person. Therefore, the Lord Jesus knowing the future destruction of the Temple (which took place in AD. 70) now tells His own disciples not to be enamoured with it, saying to them: “Do you not see all these things? Assuredly, I say to you, not one stone shall be left here upon another, that shall not be thrown down.” Now the Lord’s Words concern not just the Temple and its buildings, but the corrupted institutions within it, which likewise would not survive its destruction. For there will be no more Temple or priesthood associated with it, until the nation of Israel itself receives the Lord Jesus Christ.
Scripture Quotations:
Preamble
Having given His finial Word to scribes
and Pharisees then declared to the Nation of Israel itself that they will no
more see Him until they say “blessed is He who comes in
the Name of the Lord.” The Lord Jesus Christ having left the Temple and
come to the Mount of Olives with His disciples will now give what is often
referred too as His Olivet Discourse, so named because it is given on the Mount
of Olives to the disciples and is recorded for us in chapters 24 and 25. Now
the contents of the Lord Jesus’ discourse will concern the destruction of the
Temple, the Tribulation period, the Lord’s Second Coming, Believers rewarded, and
the finial Judgment of the Nations. Commentary
