15 Then they
also brought infants to Him that He might touch them; but when the disciples
saw it, they rebuked them. 16 But Jesus
called them to Him and said, “Let the little
children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of God.
17 Assuredly,
I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child
will by no means enter it.”
Commentary
Vs. 15 “Then they also brought infants to Him that He might touch them; but when the disciples saw it, they rebuked them.”
Having warned about the self-assured arrogance of the Pharisees, and conversely the reception of God of every repentant sinner. The people now bring their infants to Jesus, so that He might touch them, and thus pronounce a blessing on them. However, when the disciples saw this, they rebuked the people for doing so, obviously feeling that Jesus’ time and Person was to important to be occupied with infants.
Vs. 16 But Jesus called them to Him and said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of God.”
However, when Jesus saw that the disciples were turning them away, He called out to them and said: “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of God.”
What a beautiful image then of what the Kingdom of God is like, where infants and little children are always welcomed in the Presence of God! For just as God the Father does not turn away repentant individuals, neither does He turn away curious and joyful children who only want to be in His Presence.
Vs. 17 “Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.”
Jesus then having revealed as much about Himself, and the Father, and their willingness to receive all children, Jesus now says, “Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.” Inhibition then when it comes to believing in the Lord Jesus Christ and thus receiving the Kingdom of God for oneself is not good! For to enter in Jesus says one must receive the Kingdom of God as a little child, uninhibited and trusting, something that requires trusting in who God is, and what He says about His Son and Himself. Salvation then comes to everyone who opens their heart and mind to, and thus believes in, the Lord Jesus Christ!
