31 And the
Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for
you, that he may sift you as wheat. 32 But
I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have
returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.”
33 But he said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with
You, both to prison and to death.” 34 Then He said, “I tell you,
Peter, the rooster shall not crow this day before you will deny three times
that you know Me.”

Vs. 31-32 31 And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.”
During this most holy night when the disciples were with the Lord Jesus Christ keeping the Passover feast, but were not yet fully understanding what was soon to occur, as Jesus would be fulfilling it. Satan behind the scenes now makes inquiry of the Lord for Peter, that he may in the Lord’s Words “sift him as wheat,” that is to literally shake him to the core of his being. Now the Lord has granted Satan to do this, so as to refine Peter and draw him though his upcoming failure into a deeper faith and understanding of Himself. And so having revealed to Peter what has just transpired, Jesus tells Peter that He has also prayed for him, so that his faith should not fail, and having revealed to Peter that this will happen, Jesus then tells him, “when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.” Which is an exhortation for us all, for there is no one amongst us who will not falter or fail in their in their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, when we too come to the end of our own confidences, strengths, or abilities and return to the Lord Jesus Christ, let us also be men and woman of God who likewise strengthen our brethren!
Vs. 33-34 33 But he said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You, both to prison and to death.” 34 Then He said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster shall not crow this day before you will deny three times that you know Me.”
Now when Peter heard Jesus say that he immediately said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You, both to prison and to death.” vs. 33 Which I believe when Peter said that it was heartfelt. Nonetheless Jesus knowing what was about to transpire now says to Peter, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster shall not crow this day before you will deny three times that you know Me.” For there are things that only the Lord knows about us, things which we either deny about ourselves, or hide from ourselves, or have never even been revealed to us about ourselves. And so here Peter is about to see a weakness in himself, through which he will deny knowing the Lord Jesus Christ. And though he will be devastated by this, by his own failure to stand with the Lord as he said he would, yet in the end it will be one of the means by which he will become more faithful, merciful, and just, when the Lord restores him.
