Luke 21:25–28

25 “And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; 26 men’s hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27 Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.”

Commentary
Having just foretold of Jerusalem’s and the Temples imminent destruction and the Jews who will also fall by the sword and be led into captivity, with Jerusalem being trampled until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. The Lord Jesus Christ now jumps many centuries forward to the time immediately preceding His return and our (that is believing Jews and Gentiles) redemption. Now in this Jesus first says “And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring;” vs. 25
These signs then are not repeatable things like Hailey’s comet, or lunar or solar eclipses that come and go in their own seasons, but they will be things that have never been seen or happened before, and so on earth there will be great distress in all nations with perplexity as to what to do, now while the heavens are being unsettled, the oceans and seas waves will be roaring, likely because of gravitational effect of those heavenly bodies now being unsettled will have on them. Therefore, Jesus says men’s hearts will fail them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken (vs. 26). It will then be at that time that the Lord of the heavens and the earth, the Son of Man, will be mightily magnified to all on earth, coming down to them from them with great power and in great glory (vs. 27). And so at that time this worlds judgment will come and our redemption be complete. Therefore, the Lord Jesus Christ says to us all who believe in Him, “Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.” Vs. 28
