Luke 21:34–38

34 “But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly. 35 For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.” 37 And in the daytime He was teaching in the temple, but at night He went out and stayed on the mountain called Olivet. 38 Then early in the morning all the people came to Him in the temple to hear Him.

Commentary
Vs. 34-35 34 “But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly. 35 For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth.

Given the extended nature of some of His Words, and more to the point peoples propensity to “wander”, Jesus now warns us all to take heed to ourselves, “…lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly.” Now carousing maybe summed up as engaging in drunken revelries, lewd parties, and sexual activities devoid of any moral restraints. Same with drunkenness and the general debauchery and misery that accompanies it. All which only leads one farther and farther away from holiness, and closer and closer to eternal destruction! Now of course people generally don’t start off with the worst, but that is very often where people end when they forsake the Lord. Now Jesus also gives us another warning, and it is also vitally important for us all to heed as well, because “the cares of this life” can and has caused many a disciple to lose sight of the Lord when they become preoccupied with the here and now, and thus spend their lives always worrying about how to provide for themselves, and or their loved ones. For there are endless cares of this life and one’s life can be consumed in always chasing them or trying to extinguish the latest “fire.” Therefore, one must always guard against having one’s life down here swallowed up by “the cares of this life”, because our lives are oh so short, and none of us are assured of life. And to be found unprepared for the Lord Jesus Christ’s return, or our returning to Him, is the greatest tragedy of all! For Jesus warns us all to be watchful lest that Day come upon us unexpectedly! “For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth.” Vs. 35 Believing in and obeying the Lord Jesus Christ is the only Way to be prepared for Him and His Return.
