Luke 22:19–20

19 And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 20 Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.”

Commentary
The Lord Jesus Christ now ushers in the New Covenant by which all believers are bound to God through Himself. Therefore, Jesus now tells His disciples, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” Vs. 19 This then is why we keep the Lords Supper and also partake of the bread as the disciples did before us, for it is given to us all to observe so that we all remember that through Jesus Christ’s broken body we have peace with, and restoration to God, the moment we believe in Him. Similarly, we also take of the Communion Cup of Christ, for as Jesus says, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.” Thus, when we take of it, we are also recalling that our sins atonement came at the very high price of Jesus suffering and dying on the Cross, and thus His shedding His blood for us all. For it is only by His broken body and shed blood that we are bound to God via the New Covenant; for as the blood of a lamb brought Israel into a covenant relationship with God (i.e. the law given through Moses); so too through the Most Precious Blood of the Lamb of God, the Lord Jesus Christ we are brought into the New Covenant with God.
