Luke 23:50–56

50 Now behold, there was a man named Joseph, a council member, a good and just man. 51 He had not consented to their decision and deed. He was from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who himself was also waiting for the kingdom of God. 52 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 53 Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a tomb that was hewn out of the rock, where no one had ever lain before. 54 That day was the Preparation, and the Sabbath drew near. 55 And the women who had come with Him from Galilee followed after, and they observed the tomb and how His body was laid.

Commentary
Vs. 50-51 50 Now behold, there was a man named Joseph, a council member, a good and just man. 51 He had not consented to their decision and deed. He was from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who himself was also waiting for the kingdom of God.

Now there was a man named Joseph from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who was a member of the Sanhedrin council, however he did not consent to their decision to condemn Jesus, nor their deed to have Pilate crucify Christ. For he himself was also waiting for the Kingdom of God, and in Jesus Christ I believe he found it.

Vs. 52-53 52 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 53 Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a tomb that was hewn out of the rock, where no one had ever lain before.

Therefore, Joseph went to Pilate to ask for the body of Jesus, so that he might give Him an honorable burial. Joseph then went to the Cross and took down the body of Jesus and wrapped it in linen, and laid Him in a tomb hewn out of solid rock, a tomb which no one had ever been laid in (see Matt. 27:57-61; Mark 15:42-47; John 19:38-42).

Vs. 54-56 54 That day was the Preparation, and the Sabbath drew near. 55 And the women who had come with Him from Galilee followed after, and they observed the tomb and how His body was laid. 56 Then they returned and prepared spices and fragrant oils. And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment.

Now when Joseph did these things it was on the day of Preparation (Friday) which was a day when people were to be preparing themselves to observe the Passovers Sabbath. And yet Joseph’s focus that day was not on himself, i.e. keeping himself from being defiled by a dead corpse, nor was he concerned about what his family, friends and neighbors, peers, or even the nation of Israel itself would think of him, as a leader in it, for having done so, but only on making sure that the Lord’s body was properly cared for. Thus, by doing so, Joseph showed himself to have also repented and believed. Now while Joseph did these things the woman who followed Jesus from Galilee, who had stayed at the Crucifixion sight after the assembled crowd had left, observed these things, and so they followed Joseph and saw the tomb and how Jesus’ body was laid in it. Then they returned home and prepared spices and fragrant oils (to embalm the body of Jesus), and having done so they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment.
