Luke 21:20–24

20 “But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation is near. 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those who are in the midst of her depart, and let not those who are in the country enter her. 22 For these are the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled. 23 But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! For there will be great distress in the land and wrath upon this people. 24 And they will fall by the edge of the sword, and be led away captive into all nations. And Jerusalem will be trampled by Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

Commentary
Vs. 20 “But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation is near.”

Here Jesus warns of the upcoming judgment of Jerusalem, and so He warns believers there that when they see Jerusalem surrounded by armies they are to flee while they can, because its desolation is near! Thus, those who did not heed His warning would perish, or be taken into captivity, as happened.

Vs. 21-22 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those who are in the midst of her depart, and let not those who are in the country enter her. 22 For these are the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled.

Similarly, Jesus also warns at that time that those who are in province of Judea; that is the Roman name of the historical land of Judah; where Jerusalem was located, must likewise flee to the mountains, because as the Lord Jesus Christ warns “these are the days of vengeance”, on those Jews there who rejected the Will of God for themselves and Crucified Him. For this will be done so that all things which are written may be fulfilled.

Vs. 23-24 23 But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! For there will be great distress in the land and wrath upon this people. 24 And they will fall by the edge of the sword, and be led away captive into all nations. And Jerusalem will be trampled by Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

Jesus now foretells of the great peril, distress and fear people will be under as they seek to flee the invasion of Jerusalem, saying, But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! For there will be great distress in the land and wrath upon this people.” Vs. 23 It will then be the time of God’s vengeance on those there who rejected and crucified His Son, for Jesus says that they will fall by the sword, and be led away captive into all nations. “And Jerusalem will be trampled by Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.” Thus, from that time forward Jerusalem will no longer be the exclusive holy city of the Jews, but will be trampled by the Gentiles (indicating it will not only be over run by the Gentiles in their day, but it will be defiled, and or hostilely ruled by them, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled). However, this is neither the end of Jerusalem, nor the Jews, for consider Ezekiel 39:21-29 and Jews finial restoration to Him when they will never be uprooted or over run again.
