47 And while
He was still speaking, behold, a multitude; and he who was called Judas, one of
the twelve, went before them and drew near to Jesus to kiss Him. 48 But Jesus
said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man
with a kiss?” 49 When
those around Him saw what was going to happen, they said to Him, “Lord, shall
we strike with the sword?” 50 And one
of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. 51 But Jesus
answered and said, “Permit even this.” And He touched
his ear and healed him. 52 Then
Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and the elders who had
come to Him, “Have you come out, as against a robber,
with swords and clubs? 53 When
I was with you daily in the temple, you did not try to seize Me. But this is
your hour, and the power of darkness.”
Commentary
Vs. 47 “And while He was still speaking, behold, a multitude; and he who was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them and drew near to Jesus to kiss Him.”
Even while Jesus was trying to warn the disciples of their own weaknesses, and their need to pray so as to not faulter, Judas Iscariot now arrives on the scene with the authorities and a multitude of armed thugs so as to seize Jesus. And so, when Judas recognized Jesus, he stepped out from amongst them and drew near to Jesus so as to kiss Him with a greeting kiss. For this was the sign he had told them that to whom he did that too they were to seize.
Vs. 48 But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”
Now as soon as Judas did this Jesus knowing why he did it, says to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?” And so, in that moment and with those softly spoken Words, Jesus while face to face with Judas and looking into his eyes, has just revealed to Judas the gravity of what he had just done.
Vs. 49 When those around Him saw what was going to happen, they said to Him, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?”
The disciples now realizing that Judas has come with men to betray Jesus to them, now respond by saying, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?”
Vs. 50 “And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear.”
However, before the Lord Jesus Christ has a chance to respond, a disciple whom we now know was the Apostle Peter, quickly strikes the servant of the high priest with a sword cutting off his right ear’. That is, he was aiming to strike him mortally in the head, but instead missed, and only severed his right ear.
Vs. 51 But Jesus answered and said, “Permit even this.” And He touched his ear and healed him.
Now when this happened, Jesus responded by saying, “Permit even this.” And He touched the ear of the wounded man and healed him.
Vs. 52-53 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and the elders who had come to Him, “Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs? 53 When I was with you daily in the temple, you did not try to seize Me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness.”
Jesus having healed the high priest’s servant now rebukes the chief priests, the captains of the temple, and the elders, by saying to them, “Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs? 53 When I was with you daily in the temple, you did not try to seize Me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness.”
This then is the moment that they have long planned and waited for, when they could seize Jesus away from the multitudes, for they had already put in place everything they needed to both falsely accuse and arrest and ultimately try Him before the Sanhedrin. And of course, Jesus knew all of this, and so His asking them why they are sizing Him now is not an inquiry per say, but rather a declaration that He knows that this is their hour, and the power of darkness. For even after daily hearing Jesus say many marvelous things of grace and truth, and witness Him doing many wonderful and merciful things to and amongst God’s people; and even now seeing Him miraculously and mercifully heal one of their own; their hearts are still only hardened to it all. Because Jesus’ Words and deeds never had a place in any of their hearts, but were only looked upon by them with continual suspicion and distrust. And so, when the Lord Jesus Christ wouldn’t side with, or ignore what they were doing wrong in their roles as Gods shepherds, Jesus only became to them One who was “threating” them and their standing before the people. Therefore, they do what evil and unjust men (and women) always do best, and that is plot their “adversaries” harm and ruin. For having rejected the Lord Jesus Christ their place now is with the powers of darkness.
