Luke 22:66–71

66 As soon as it was day, the elders of the people, both chief priests and scribes, came together and led Him into their council, saying, 67 “If You are the Christ, tell us.” But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will by no means believe. 68 And if I also ask you, you will by no means answer Me or let Me go. 69 Hereafter the Son of Man will sit on the right hand of the power of God.” 70 Then they all said, “Are You then the Son of God?” So He said to them, “You rightly say that I am.” 71 And they said, “What further testimony do we need? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth.”

Commentary
Vs. 66-69 66 As soon as it was day, the elders of the people, both chief priests and scribes, came together and led Him into their council, saying, 67 “If You are the Christ, tell us.” But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will by no means believe. 68 And if I also ask you, you will by no means answer Me or let Me go. 69 Hereafter the Son of Man will sit on the right hand of the power of God.”

Having spent the night in the hands of His cruel captors, Jesus must now face the Sanhedrin council, that is the ruling religious body of the Jews. It will be here then that they will seek to get Jesus to self-incriminate, by saying that He is the Son of God, thus making Himself equal with God, so that they can condemn Him to death for blasphemy. And yet they still have lingering doubts that maybe Jesus truly is the Christ or their Messiah (and thus the Son of God) and so they ask Him to declare as much to them. Yet as the Lord Jesus Christ declares to them, they will by no means believe if He tells them about Himself, nor if He asks them what they truly believe about Him will they tell Him (vs. 66-68). And so, He answers them with this one statement: Hereafter the Son of Man will sit on the right hand of the power of God.” Vs. 69 That is the One whom they are now interrogating, they will all see sitting on the right hand of the power of God, where He will then question and judge them, and all peoples with them, according to what they have believed and done.

Vs. 70-71 70 Then they all said, “Are You then the Son of God?” So He said to them, “You rightly say that I am.” 71 And they said, “What further testimony do we need? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth.”

Now when Jesus said that, they immediately responded by asking Him, “Are You then the Son of God?” Seeking then to have Him “blasphemy” by saying that He is the Son of God. However, Jesus will not justify, nor enable, nor partake in their wicked scheme, and so He simply says to them, “You rightly say that I am.” Which then infuriates them, and with that they then say, “What further testimony do we need? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth.” The Jews and their leaders then have obtained all the testimony that they need (in their eyes) to put Jesus Christ to death. However, because they were under Roman rule and law, they could not arbitrarily put someone to death for “violating” their law. Therefore, they must first take Jesus to Pilate the Roman Governor assigned to govern them and have him first sign off on Jesus’ condemnation.
