Luke 22:1–6

1 Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called Passover. 2 And the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might kill Him, for they feared the people. 3 Then Satan entered Judas, surnamed Iscariot, who was numbered among the twelve. 4 So he went his way and conferred with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray Him to them. 5 And they were glad, and agreed to give him money. 6 So he promised and sought opportunity to betray Him to them in the absence of the multitude.

Commentary
Vs. 1Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called Passover.”

The Feast of Unleavened Bread lasted seven days and was always ushered in by first observing the Passover. Now it will be in fulfillment of the Passover that the Lord Jesus Christ’s blood will be shed on it so as to provide the Atonement for all our sins, so that God might Pass over in judgment all of us who believe in Him.

Vs. 2And the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might kill Him, for they feared the people.”

Though the chief priests and scribes had always wanted to kill Jesus, however they would often defer from this for their fear of the people around Him and how they would respond if they did. Yet now with Jesus regularly being there in their jurisdiction in Jerusalem, specifically the Temple, they fear that with Jesus steadily increasing in popularity there with the people, that He might actually turn them on them. Not that Jesus would ever have such intentions as they did, but their minds were so bent on seeing evil in Him, that they could only transpose their own evil cunning thoughts and schemes and desires on Him.

Vs. 3-4 3 Then Satan entered Judas, surnamed Iscariot, who was numbered among the twelve. 4 So he went his way and conferred with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray Him to them.

It is now at this time Satan enters Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve. This is the only time in Scripture that is mentioned as happening. As well Judas Iscariot himself had himself paved the way for his fulfilling the Scripture since it is stated that he himself, though placed in position of trust in keeping the money box used by the disciples, used to steal what was in it (John 12:6). And as we know Satan and his own only come into peoples lives to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). With Satan then entering Judas he immediately goes and confers with the chief priests and the captains (that is the guards of the Temple), how he might betray Jesus to them.

Vs. 5-6 5 And they were glad, and agreed to give him money. 6 So he promised and sought opportunity to betray Him to them in the absence of the multitude.

Now when Judas came to them saying He was willing to betray Jesus to them they were glad, because they themselves had been unable to seize Jesus because of the multitudes always being around Him. And so they agreed to give Judas money to do so.
