Luke 22:7–13

7 Then came the Day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover must be killed. 8 And He sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat.” 9 So they said to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare?” 10 And He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered the city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house which he enters. 11 Then you shall say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?” ’ 12 Then he will show you a large, furnished upper room; there make ready.” 13 So they went and found it just as He had said to them, and they prepared the Passover.

Commentary
Vs. 7 Then came the Day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover must be killed.”

It is now the Day of the Passover, that is the Day (Thursday) when the Passover would be sacrificed at midnight, thus the Passover would be kept on Friday.

Vs. 8 And He sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat.”

The Lord Jesus now asks Peter and John (arguably the two disciples who were closest to Jesus and who will later follow Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard after He is arrested to be tried there) to “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat.”

Vs. 9 So they said to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare?”

Peter and John obviously had no foreknowledge of where Jesus wanted them to prepare this Passover, nor did they yet understand the significance of it, of what it would mean for them and for all.

Vs. 10-13 10 And He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered the city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house which he enters.

Jesus (like prophets before Him) now gives the disciples very specific directions on what will unfold and what they are to do when they observe these things. Notice there is no ambiguity in Jesus foretelling them what will happen and what they are to do. Why do I say all of this, is simply so that you do not listen to anyone who claims to be a prophet and yet operates under the cloak of ambiguity. Therefore, Jesus now tells them when they enter the city, they will meet a man carrying a pitcher of water whom they are to follow into the house that he enters (vs. 10). Now upon entering the house they would encounter the master of the house to whom they are to say, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?” ’ Clearly then there are workers of God, even angels of God (Heb. 13:2), who are always working behind the scenes to prepare the way for Him and His people. Having told them what they are to say, Jesus now tells them what will happen when they do, saying to them, “Then he will show you a large, furnished upper room; there make ready.” Vs. 12
